10/09/07 Update: We are implementing a "secure connections only" policy effective October 15, 2007.  All users will be required to connect to our server with SSL enabled.  This policy is being implemented to protect our network against unauthorized connections from bots and insecure proxy servers.  This is the latest step in securing our IRC environment, as we have already implemented client-side encryption methods (on top of SSL via addon scripts) across the board.

Prospective users should consult the documentation for their client regarding how to connect with SSL, as most clients support it natively or with little configuration.  Any questions should be addressed via email to admin_@_societyofthemind_._com (without the underscores).

The current SSL port is 6697, with 6667 remaining non-encrypted until this policy change goes into effect.  After 10/15/2007, all public client ports will be SSL-only.

Also, our network is small enough that we do notice unfamiliar connections.  When one of our IRC Operators sends you a private message welcoming you to the network and asking if you need any assistance, please respond, or we will assume that you are a bot and ban you permanently.

SocietyOfTheMind is a small IRC network intended to be a place for friends to hang out and chat. We also are a great place for a more "private" IRC setting as compared to the larger networks, as you can very easily create a new channel to hang out in with just a few friends. We don't have the constant problems that plague the large IRC networks, such as netsplits, trolls, and just pests in general. While most of our users are in their teens, there are several who are much older, around 30 or so. Regardless of age, nationality, creed, race, sexual orientation, etc., everyone is welcome on the SOtM network. We are also a great network for general chat; topics vary widely from day to day.
