The History of Osprey Networks - IRC ---------------------------------------------------------- Well im going to try & educate you on IRC how it got started how we got started & so on so bear with me cause its a long strange trip & fell free to jump around if i bore you to much

The Beginning of IRC

IRC was born during summer 1988 when Jarkko "WiZ" Oikarinen wrote the first IRC client and server at the University of Oulu, Finland (where he was working at the Department of Information Processing Science). Jarkko intended to extend the BBS software he administrated at tolsun.oulu.fi, to allow news the usenet style, real time discussions and similar BBS features. The first part he implemented was the chat part, which he did with borrowed parts written by his friends Jyrki Kuoppala and Jukka Pihl. It was initially tested on a single machine, and according to the words from Jarkko himself "The birthday of IRC was in August 1988". The first IRC server was named tolsun.oulu.fi. Jarkko got some friends at the Helsinki and Tampere Universities to start running IRC servers when his number of users increased. Other universities soon followed. Markku Järvinen helped improving the client. At this time Jarkko realized that the rest of the BBS features probably wouldn't fit in his program! Jarkko got in touch with guys at the University of Denver and Oregon State University. They had got an IRC network running (they had got the program from one of Jarkko's friends, Vijay Subramaniam -- the first non-finnish person to use IRC) and wanted to connect to the finnish network. IRC then grew larger and got used on the entire Finnish national network - Funet - and then connected to Nordunet, the Scandinavian branch of the Internet. In November 1988, IRC had spread across the Internet.

BBSNET
The original members of BBSnet came from another IRC Network called SysopNet. SysopNet was formed in 1996 by a number of BBS Sysops and Developers, and headed by Scott Drake of Inovative Solutions Online. Some of our members included Krombose, Catlin, Scanner, BlueBird, Mprowler, pcMike, Eightball, Emaus (Z), Dev, Manning, Astark (Top), Tiny, Grapes, Solitude, GSValore, Longshot, Kubla, BSchollnick, QCS_Alan, Levithan, HouseMouse, and Diamond45. There were many others that dropped in and chatted with us on all things BBS for several years. SysopNet ran into some problems in late 1998, at a time when the Administrator (Scanner) was going though some health problems and was unable to keep the network under control. A large conflict rose between some of the members regarding software piracy, that esculated to the point that a few members became very bitter at each other. A user called "homerodent" (nick slightly changed to protect his identity) made some very hurtful comments to one of the members that was against BBS piracy, Catlin. His comments actually made her shut down her web site (known as the the Wishing Well's Sysops Corner) and she left SysopNet and the BBS scene forever. She is dearly missed. One of the other trouble makers, a young kid named MikeH wanted to get everyone to abandon SysopNet, and switch over to a new irc network which was ran by BlackBird BlackBirds net became known as BlackNet. Almost all the SysopNet IRCd's switched over, and it soon afterwards SysopNet became a desolate wasteland. MikeH continued to stalk SysopNet's #BBS channel, so he could pvtmsg any newbs and redirect them to BlackNet. Unfortunatly BlackNet also ran into issues after a few months, when MikeH wanted members to switch over to another IRC network he hosted himself. MikeH was an abusive and arrogant teen which some of the older members could not tolorate. BlackNet had far too many rules on what we could and could not discuss, and anyone that idled in #BBS for more then an hour would be kicked out. Two of the older BlackNet members left BlackNet in early 2000 and formed BBSnet, pcMike (from pcmicro) and EightBall (from GexOnline). The idea was to have a #BBS channel where we could talk openly about all things BBS without the immature behavior that we experienced on the other networks. No one is ever kicked for being idle. However, we had no tolorance for Script Kiddies with their cOlOrFuL mIxEx cAsE tYpE and their 1337 / AOL speak. In September 2000, BlackBird lost his internet connection and took down BlackNet. The remaining members of BlackNet moved to irc.lordlegacy.org (ran by Z), or to MikeH's IRC Server. Lordlegecy.org and the BBSnet folk were still good friends, and after a few months we decided to merge our networks together and allow others to link up as well. Soon irc.bbses.org linked as well, run by SirTwist. We had other BBS and door developers that hung out with us, including the the authors of Synchronet, and EleBBS, and active coders such as Deuce (TradeWars2, and Synchronet hacker), Manning (Mannsoft/R&M Software), Vagabond (VBsoft), Z (Lord developer), plash (Demonic Productions), Dragon (Ambroshia), and GSValore. Several other Sysops hung out as well, including ACTION, Andrew, Alexie, Azrael, Bo, Bobo, Chas, Cyan, Coolio, DarkRaven, Dev, Dink, Eli, Fusion, Grapes, Invisi, Jazzman, Kram, KJClayton, Levathan, Longshot, Maskreet, Merlin, MrProper, Nozy, Nullvalue, pcMike, TCBO1, Total, Thorny, Thorizine, Tinas, Pointman, Pony, QCS-Alan, Runderwo, Rushfan, Solitude, Snoopy, Swinn, Schizo, Tempest, Uber, Virus_II, Venom, Vipah, Warp4, Winston, Xbit, and Zoob, and even some non sysops like GameMaster and Hoova. Lots of other Sysops dropped in and visited from time to time. (edited b/c i was there & bbsnet got a few things wrong) In late 2000, there was another split of members when Eli Gomamon and Swinn left BBSnet to start their own IRC network called Oddnet. Several of the younger 'Pokemon players' such as GameMaster and his friends went with them, and a few members now hang out on both #BBS channels. pcMike from BBSnet was visiting the Oddnet folks and noticed they were running a pirated version of ConferenceRoom IRC server as their hub. The problem with running a pirated ConferenceRoom is that anyone can use the /oper command by entering "/oper " and there are only a couple pirated serial numbers on the net. pcMike had a little fun by /oper'ing himself, and linked Oddnet and BBSnet together! The two Networks were only linked for a few hours before Eli and Swinn noticed. Eli was very upset, and accused pcMike of 'Hacking' their server. To this day Eli is still very upset about it.(notes: not really) Swinn on the otherhand appreciated PCM's sense of humor, and pcMike told Swinn how he gained oper control so that Swinn could prevent anyone else from 'Hacking' them again. :) (notes: all i said was why couldnt he just tell us? instead of hacking oper? thats all i was mad about gezz altho it is nice to me immortalized in there history i must have made a lasting impresstion on someone) ODDNET
"Quoted from www.oddnet.net" What's Odd About... I presume this should be some sort of 'why we exist' blotch of text. We can also make this into a history of sorts as well! Yay for us, we're saving the environment by not wasting valuable binary space. Let's take a moment, and parse a little bit of history information. We can then move onto the other important facts. Remember, take notes. There will be a test. Everyone does it, so should you! So here we are, many years from when we initiated our first connection to the now infamous port 6667. Several billion lines of text later, we're still latching onto this parallel world known as IRC -- often spending more of our lives in these dark virtual-rooms than we do in other parts of our houses or apartments. Regardless of if you've been around since the beginning of IRC, or if you just happen to be a passer-by reading a boring website, chances are you've at least dawned the darkness of some chatroom at one point or another. Set Apart! It's often hard to distinguish a noticable difference between a brand-new never before seen IRC network, and one which is a split-off of another network. Most large networks are spin-offs of eachother, with various twists. So, for now, let's go ahead and set the record straight... OddNet is not a spin-off. There, all set! Inception, Birth, Naming and Growth With the closing of the summer in 2001, a few friends in a different network had finally decided on creating their own network for fun. They'd been talking about it for months, but hadn't actually circumvented their laziness until then. Starting a network is easy, compared to naming it. Hours went by with nobody coming up with a suitable name, until somebody walked into the conversation and blurted out the phrase "whynot OddNet, freaks!?". With those simple subtle words, came the amazing network name we hold true to today. We've grown to include several servers (though we only really need one), and an average of about 40 users. ( OK now back to reality ) I Founded Oddnet (Eli Sanford) along with my friends Swinn & Gomamon (he has to many akas to list) we created a network with swinn as hub cause gomamon & myself were on dialup at the time we had a working net for about a month before GameMaster even joined! yes he did name the network but failed to mention that he did not create Oddnet! there history was probbly edited after my departure from oddnet which i will get into later oddnet was founded in 2000 altho it didnt go by that name at the time it was called slothnet cause 2 of the servers were on dialup it made since then we setup swinn as hub & started getting users in 2001 GameMaster wanted to join we said fine we had been in the prossess of thinking of new names when GameMaster entered the convo & said his quoted line so enuff about oddnet on to better things

Osprey IRC - A New Beginning

Well after several years of running oddnet the leadership of the network become a democratic system which would have worked if the opers were not bias & haveing a major in one group of friends so in 2004 i started being threatend with removeal from oddnet by meare opers b/c of my not agreeing with GM & DEV's Dictatorship over Oddnet they wanted to set some rules in my channel that i didnt agree with & when i denied they created a new channel #chat & asked all the users over to it so they could dictate them more officantly i joined #chat & my script auto oped me i was threatend with squit if i join or chatted in DEV's channel again i brought this up to GM & he sided with DEV after sevreal other agruments over basic rights to admin my own channel that was registered to me! I started Osprey IRC named after Osprey Networks my inet radio station, Osprey is a monarchy as this system has worked well for me on my bbs message network ACnet i had been asked by may others (Slasher Tuneman & Time Warrior) who like me didnt like the dictatorship that was going on in oddnet to start another network so in the grand scheme of things i did so but alway hope that there would be someway to repair the damage done to oddnet but i soon realized that i wasnt welcome in oddnet as they removed my server & delinked me cuase i wasnt idle in the channel? even tho i was in contact with GM on a regular basis ah well i got pissed & told them all to kiss my (well you know) & here we are lol i have no real regreats other than wishing i would have saw it comeing sooner but i was busy with my dad being sick & real life but Osprey IRC is my new beginning a chance for me to start fresh & do things as i should have from the beginning with oddnet & even back to bbsnet altho i was not an admin there i did make some enemys & this time around im hopeing things go a bit smoother Now your probbly wondering why i posted all this? i mean alot of it doesnt put me in the best of lights but i belive to know where your going you have to know where you have been so i posted the history as best i could peice it together Thank You Rev. Eli Sanford
