The network was formed in 1996 as an IRC network between 3 Bulgarian universities. In 1998, a decision was made to unify the used software, start using ircd-hybrid and the compatible hybserv services. This leads to incompatibility with the already used software and servers not willing to make the switch were delinked. New servers came to their place, new people, new problems, problems that lead to the separation of the network in two in 2000. Not much happened between 2000 and 2005, the used software was unmaintained and was getting obsolete. However, the users continued to grow.
In the beginning of 2005 it was obvious that ircd-hybrid 6.0 was not scalable enough to handle the growing 40 000 users of the network, it had to be replaced asap. The new software was (and still is) ircd-ratbox. The switch was done carefully between June 2005 and March 2006. Next to be replaced were the services. The work on them begun in the beginning of 2006, when the users were well above 50 000, and they were deployed in March 2007. The chosen services are ratbox-services and the version used on UniBG is a patched one, with the command interface and functionality of hybserv.
