In October 1992, Wildthang put up essex.ecn.uoknor.edu and linked it to underworld, run by [skywarrior], to start up a local test net. Orginally a playground to test bots, the tiny network grew as friend invited friend. Other servers in the US and Canada linked, and within months the underground network joined up with a European net, and "Undernet" was born in January, 1993. The network was virtually empty - a vast wasteland - when WHIZZARD set up a channel for opers. Appropriately, he called it #wasteland. For many years, #Wasteland was the networks unofficial oper help channel, simply by virtue of the fact that was where the opers congregated. Users caught on and went there seeking help with takeovers and other problems. A very strong core group of opers has kept their philosophy alive through years of political infighting, disagreements, servers and services coming and going. This hasn't affected the userbase at all, which came for Undernet's organization, stability, and most of all, services. Undernet was the first IRC network to have channel registration and a channel services bot to help keep ops and prevent takeovers. Undernet services and IRCU (IRC server code) have been copied and used on many new networks, and has been the primary factor in making Undernet one of the world's largest IRC networks.
