The network was founded in 2003 by jonnu (aka 'squirrel') to house channels for amateur game-makers and indie game developers, after their previous IRC network "HappyApathy" shut down due to server costs.

Today it remains a small network filled with a dedicated following of chatsters from several websites (such as rpg2knet.com).  The hub used to be hosted in California, USA but has since moved to Maidenhead, UK.
