"The LiloFree Network was founded in june 2001 by gears of #LinuxOS in response to flagrant oper-abuse
and channel medding on the part of lilo of the then Open Projects Network. The LiloFree Network originally
operated as a kind of channel gateway by way of the changate and ircbridge projects to allow people to
access certain channels on Open Projects without having to actually be on the Open Projects Network.
These days LFnet still maintains that ability, but since nearly everyone who was using LiloFree's facilities
has moved over to using LFnet's native IRC servers the service is largely inactive. LiloFree's main user base is still the #linuxOS channel and many of the server operators are members of that channel. LFnet strives to maintain an unompromised "back to basics" IRC service free of nickservs, chanservs or excessive useless and annoying user and channel modes. The network is very reliable but suffers from
the usual 'small irc network' syndrome where newcommers find that noone will talk to them, that said
an open channel policy allows any self contained community to set up their own channels and a few
groups unrelated to the network have done so." | |
