The first online LDS channel or room that was operated on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week was called #Mormon and was operated by Ed Rogers for 10 years since October, 1991. This channel was located on the first IRC network called EFNET. This channel was a unique gathering place for members and non-members alike to fellowship together for many years. As other networks came into place other #Mormon channels were founded by other saints. Many wonderful people shared the Gospel and as a result people became closer to Christ and some even joined His Church as a result of their affiliations on IRC. The largest concentration of online saints can usually be found on church related channels or rooms on one of the three largest IRC networks: DALNET, EFNET and UNDERNET.
In recent years, Ed Rogers (known as "Pooka" on IRC) and Paul Yorke (known as "Sorbonne" on IRC) have been running smaller, private IRC networks for several years in an effort to get the necessary experience and policies in place that would help facilitate the future emergence of their shared dream: an LDS owned and operated chat network. In late January, 2002, they had established a small network using the name LDSN (Latter-day Saint Network) in the hopes of making their dream a reality.
In early March of this year (2002), two like-minded LDS-oriented IRC networks (LDSN and LDSIRC.net) merged to form LDSircNet to attempt to put together an LDS on-line community based around their own IRC chat network. They currently have 4 servers connected from: San Jose, CA; Lufkin, TX; Modesto, CA and Finland. You can access additional information from their web site at http://www.ldsirc.net/
We are proud to announce a new family friendly IRC (internet relay chat) network owned and operated by temple worthy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS community has needed a good clean place where families and children can chat without the hazards of the other networks, a place where non-members are welcome as long as they abide by the rules and keep it clean. LDS standards will be enforced.
We are LDSircNet and have put together an LDS on-line community based around our IRC chat network. We currently have 4 servers connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week from: San Jose, CA; Lufkin, TX; Modesto, CA and Finland. You can access all of our network information at our web site: http://www.ldsirc.net/
"I have wanted to start a network like this for a long time," said Greg Anderson aka ByondF1, the owner of http://ldsicq.byondf1.com (LDS Members on the Internet), and one of the founders and administrators of LDSircNet. The other founders/administrators are Jim Connor, Ed Rogers, Matthew Reed, Tony Lewis, and Paul Yorke. The people who use LDSircNet will be able to create public and private channels for family chats and private get-togethers. For people new to IRC there are several help channels that will be available. There will also be system administrators and IRCops who can help with channel-related issues.
Tony Lewis (aka Ammon), another founder, said that "LDSircNet is a very good way to talk with other members. IRC has been a very rewarding way to share the Gospel with others. Where should a member of the LDS church find a good clean conversation just by surfing the web?" he asked. "It has been said we are a peculiar people . and we are." Tony mentioned that he and the other founders have desired to start a network like this for some time. This time the time was right.
MrGumby, a member in channel #LDSirc said, "I am glad to see so many people are now using this IRC."
Jim Conner (aka NOTJames, Kwan, and SnafuX pronounced Snafoo-EX) has been chatting (bbs and irc) since 1991. He started out on Efnet and quickly moved to Undernet when it wasn't so large. He was a regular in #Mormon and eventually became a chanop in #Mormon. It wasn't too long and Jim decided he wanted to venture off into the land of running his own IRC network. He founded PseudoNet (PSN) and ran that with an attempted LDS-like structure for nearly three years. He was probably one of the first on ByondF1's ICQ list and even confronted ByondF1 long ago on starting an LDS irc network. Unfortunately, bandwidth was more expensive and more difficult to come by back then and the decision was turned down. Well, several years later it seems that the first functioning LDSirc network is coming to life and Jim is just grateful to be a part of it.
"It is my desire to see members of the church come together as a whole and in a broad sense to discuss both spiritual things and plain old good things through a medium that is broad and fast and in real-time. The Internet is truly a blessing. Lets make great use of it!", says Jim.
Happy chatting folks! We hope to see you soon! | |
