KnightNet was conceived in March 1997 due to the desire to create an IRC environment which was friendly and hospitable for users of all ages. The decision was made to use a medieval theme as a basis for the network. The IRC daemon was created with modifications consistent with the terminology used in those times. In June 1997, the network was finally launched. When you visit with us you will notice many differences from your traditional IRC network. First you will be aware how we strive to keep our network free from users who harass others or use exploits against our users. Secondly, you will find new terminology. To register your nickname you will need to send a message to Peasantserv. If you want to create a place for your friends to chat, you may create a Tavern and use our Tavernserv to do this. Those who administer our network also have unique terms for their position. The head administrators are our King and our Queen. The next level of administrators are the Counts. Next in line are the Knights who serve our network valiently. These three groups would be known as IRC operators on other networks. The swordsmen are individuals that are in training to become Knights. Those in charge of maintaining the IRC Servers for KnightNet are the guardians. The users are known as peasants, innkeepers, and barons. The Barons are the owners of the taverns. the Innkeepers are the Tavern operators, and the peasants are all the wonderful people who frequent Knightnet.
