Juped is a new network, but it has a rich (not really), confusing (really) history.
It pretty much started with an mIRC scripting community on the Webnet IRC network called "ScriptaZ". The founder -- we'll call him Bryan because that's his name -- started a website that became fairly popular, and he cultivated a modest following on IRC. This is where the lineage gets fun:
He started his own IRC network called ScriptaZ for obvious reasons (the community's name, remember?), which later changed its name to Darktides to reflect the name of his hosting company. Since 2000, the same core group of users moved from network to network, stopping over on ChatChannel, geekIRC, Oh-Snap and, briefly, Dalnet.
Somewhere along the way Bryan went in his own direction and stopped caring about ScriptaZ. This is where geekIRC and Oh-Snap merged.
I digress. Oh-Snap has a history, too, afterall. It is the story of another Internet icon; the alpha, the omega, the beginning and the end -- in short: the moon. We'll call him Michael because that's his name. He started oh-snap.org because he wanted a domain name. Then he wanted an IRC network. He wanted alot. He got the IRC network. In the beginning there was nothing. Then there was the fat. Then there was the Liz.
Then came #mmmbop. The fat brought the mmmbop. They moved around alot, too. Webnet, linkline, other nets, and most importantly, Oh-Snap.
Anyway, the ScriptaZ folks on geekIRC (ScriptaZ last network) merged with the #mmmbop crowd on Oh-Snap and the administration tried for 40 days and 40 nights to create a cool name. Then we found out from the good folks at internic.net that juped.com had dropped.
The end. | |
