Why are you using conference room? Its old, antiquated and not as good as some of the newer software.

Lyhne1,

I see your points and considered them before posting, but people who have true interest will PM me, that's the point behind this. I don't want a 4 page forum post about why, what _I_ should do, etc etc from two tons of inexperienced IRC admins. I am a seasoned IRCop (10 years), I already know. So again, people who have interest in starting a professional network with enterprise level servers, please PM me for further details.

Kissy,

ConferenceRoom is not outdated. The current version is 3.5SEC, please visit http://www.webmaster.com/ for further details about your concern. There are other great IRCd's out there like bahamut, and IRCu however neither compliments the user and the admin with ease of use, customization and manageability of an enterprise solution. If I wanted to start a network with IRCu, bahamut or Unreal then I would have and then just asked for users on here. The goal of this project is to create a unique successful server/network for users with many unique and positive pieces for the user. I have many ideas but need a _TRUE_ team of seasoned and dedicated members to get this off the ground and going. Once on the road then the benefits really start kicking in. I see a lot of networks start and drop within the first month - all with the same structure, setup, offerings, and INSANE amount of IRCops. This seems like the small business industry - people either don't work hard enough at it or just give up too quickly. I hope these answers clear up your concerns. As for the readers, please read and respond via PM if serious. My post was not meant to offend anyone, so if I did then I am truly sorry.

Best regards,

I'd be interested -- I wouldn't be interested in the license fee costs though Confused

hi xtu2;

First I'm not inexperienced, I've been a Network Administrator longer than you have been an IRCop. I've also used CR on many occasions, including version 1.0 way back in the day. I have switched and several of my friends have switched from CR because it's not worth the money. We have found that even though most IRCds fit your description, that the money we spent on CR could have gone to paying a coder for the same features. as far as avatars and graphical smilies goes, that's up to the client to support and they are ONLY seen if the client supports them. There are clients out there right now that support graphical smilies and such that work on any IRCd! In short, the graphics selling point is moot if the user is using mIRC (and most people do) for example, they just won't see them.

The reason for my reply is not to try to sway you from your IRCd of choice, after all it is your choice. What I'm after is to insure that you truely know and understand that there are free solutions available that do nearly the exact same thing as CR. To insure my accuracy I just reviewed the features for 3.5SEC that lists for $2k and I can confidently tell you that the IRCd that I use does all that. No, it doesn't have a fancy web interface, but it can. With some coding I can make it do everything that CR does for $0. That solution is limited to 10k concurrent connections, I doubt you'll ever need that many. My IRCd can hold more than 10k clients as-is and I can bump it up to even more if I want. My IRCd doesn't need "agents" to hold any rooms open, it has a persistant channel mode that retains modes, topics and bans so that even with 0 users the channel is "open" without the resource expense of placing a pseudo-client in the channel and monitoring.

Your claims to customization are nearly comical, so sorry. A closed source, non-modular IRCd is NOT as customizable as an Open Source, modular IRCd. I can go on and on about feature vs feature, but as I said, that's not my intention. I will compare feat vs feat if you'd like, but only in private. No need to feed the trolls.

My intention is simply this. IF you truely want success with your network, you need to insure that you have chosen the correct software. Not only to support your users, which very few know, understand or even like CR. Which is another hurdle aside from the thousands of dollars that, lets face it .. 99.999% will laugh at let alone spend. You just might find you are the only one or 1 of few that will host a server on your network. The logistics of CR is just wrong for IRC.

Again, I'm not trying to sway anything in your plans, I didn't even tell you which free, GPL licensed, open source ircd I use as proof there was no debunking statements like "my ircd is better than yours". I'm not about that.

In short, as a seasoned Admin, I think you should re-think your software solution because everything that CR can do, so can IRCd. IMHO, if it's uniqueness you want, then pay a coder $2k to customize an ircd for you. It'll still more customizable than any closed source, non-modular solution. Plus you can have more than 1 ircd for the same $2k.

Please think of this reply from a logistical point of view and not an IRCd bashing point of view. Regardless, I wish you luck on your project. Smile

Regards,

kat

I couldn't have said it any better kat. I don't see how someone would pay so much for features they can pretty much get for free, even better and more stable.

Well I read your book, but I will come back and inform you I have a decades worth of administrative experience. Both in IRC and with network operating systems such as Linux etc. my professional experience ranges from secured linux network o/s's to coding C/Bash/VB applications in a network environment. To be honest, I am not sure why you think I wanted to code a closed-source IRCd? I never meant that in any way. For costs sake I have an inside referral that can get me the license for $100 so money is not a real issue here for licensing, for clients supported yeah 10k but really, we're talking top 10 networks now. I appreciate your suggestion and comments but please don't be so quick to judge ones experience, it's quite offensive in my eyes. As for the project, I scrubbed it. The only support I got was "ill be an IRCop!" So never mind, I will be focusing my efforts with FusionChat and SGWirc.

Thanks for the tips Wink
