FMDNet is a new IRC network that is currently looking for staff. I'm currently the only one operating the network at this time and the only user lol (which I hope to change soon) Smile

I am currently looking for:

Webmaster
IRC Operators
Network Co-Administrator
Services Administrators (Must be good with Anope IRC Services)
Technical Administrators (Must be good with UltimateIRCd)
Technical Co-Administrators (Must be good with UltimateIRCd)

Experience in these positions is always better to have on the team.

If anyone reading this post has a IRCd and wants to link, then please come by as well.

To contact me if you are interested, /server irc.fmdnet.net join #FMDNet or email me at sypher@fmdnet.net and tell me what you are interested in helping with.

My goal is to make this network a friendly success to all user types Smile

All help is GREATLY appreciated !!!!

Thanks again !

Are you sure you want to be looking to fill 6 or so staff positions without more users? I would suggest advertising and gaining an userbase that would require a staff of that size. 6 Operators on one network with 2 or so users is border line ridiculous.

I would fill staff spots first that way when users come you have the needed staff to keep them and i been to there network and i think its good for only having about 10 users. Very good start keep it up

The problem with that analysis is that there is no magic user to staff ratio that works for everyone. So you can't come to an educated conclusion about how many users a network can handle based solely on the number of opers they have.

I've personally been part of a 5 person team that managed a 140,000 user network so long as everything was running smoothly. I've also personally participated in the exact reverse where hundreds of opers barely handled that same network because services was missing.

There are far too many factors at play to determine how many staff members is needed to sufficiently handle a network. Even which services package you choose affects how many staff you need. Case in point is Serv1 vs Serv2 for example. With Serv1, you have to register channel for users along with changing founders and several other things that Serv2 allows the users to do themselves which saves having to hire staff just to perform these tasks. So in one package you need more staff simply based on workload.

Additionally, it's NOT a good idea to hire a bunch of staff and hope the users come. this is because there are users out there that flee from networks that have nothing but staff. It can be viewed as a sign of inexperience. However, it's a good idea to have enough staff to cover every foreseeable situation. It' gets tricky for sure. Smile

One thing you can do with the staff issue is use an IRCd that allows staff status hiding. This is NOT the same as making them seem completely invisible and able to join channels unseen. What Staff Status Hiding does is makes your staff appear as normal users even when they are opered. What this does is it allows you to have your cake and eat it too. You have all the staff you need without looking like your entire network is nothing but staff (even if it is). Unreal has user mode H which hides all the information in the opers /whois reply to make them look like a normal user.

Another thing you can do is to give access to the help channel to all the opers as normal, but make it a network policy that they don't sit there opped. This will prevent users from coming into a room full of ChanOps. It just looks friendlier. IF the staff member needs to perform tasks as a ChanOp, they can always "op up" or even better is issue their command directly to services. There are several services packages that allow identified ChanOps to use their channel access without having ops just by issueing the command to the services bot. For example: /msg ChanServ kick #channel Lamer.

With this advice you can satisfy both dacayhero's suggestion as well as RyanWenke's observation at the exact same time. These are just a few tips and I hope they help.

Doesn't really matter about the ratio im just saying that if a IRC Network that's just starting up has a team of IRCops to help it start up it will have a better chance. If you fill positions early users can meet your staff and things will setlle easier then filling them later though thats just my point of view. Smile
