This man has name [no naming names] and he is from [who cares] and he chills in [ditto] and he took his botnet and exausted my bandwidth and i owe my company $23 now for it i hate him ban him from all ur networks he is bad all i seen was like [exxageration] bots join and part and then my ircd went down and anyways please watchout for him hes not a person to joke with i called the fbi and i gave them his ip and where he hangs out and they said the most they could probably do is just call his ISP and tell them to monitor him or give him some sort of warning GRRR I HATE THAT DDOS IS NOT TAKEN SERIOUSE ON SMALL NETWORKS!

We're getting way too many of these types of posts. This type of stuff happens in hundreds of IRC channels every single day. If someone attacks your network, get the logs and report him to his ISP. No one HERE can do anything about it, so why fill the forums with "he flooded me!" and then "he flooded me back" and endless bickering and accusations.

Having been involved in IRC since the early 1990's, I have had the benefit of knowing many hackers of both hat colors.

The common thread is, all hackers have an intense curiosity about how things work, and after a brief rebellious phase (which may or may not have gotten them into serious trouble) most end up working in some aspect of IT.

There's a lot of truth to the saying, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Admins, and hackers, have power. There is no need to show off by words or deed. Treat each other FAIRLY and there should be no problems on either side.

Most people are not sociopaths, attacking just for the thrill of attacking. But it only takes a few.

It was the IRC ops who went into channels to flex their O line by mass killing, g-lining bots, closing the channel, who usually found their servers attacked shortly thereafter. The best course of action is to remove that O line, of course - but sometimes it was an admin, sometimes one of the network's founders or an owner. Unless they removed themselves their damage to the network could be fatal.

It was the hackers who viciously took down servers and networks just for the thrill of it that found their new won fame was very short lived, and soon followed by enormous legal bills, shame upon their families, and rejection by their friends both online and off. I can read off a list of names of people who tried to make a name for themselves on IRC only to see it all blow up in their face. What they don't realize is, that for every "friend" who pats them on the back for their exploits, there are 200 more people who think they are real dicks.

Like I said, most managed to wake up in time. Most reach a point where they see online pissing contests will not get them where they want to go in life. If you are a true hacker, then you want to know how things work - to UNDERSTAND - so you can manipulate code and systems to do what you want. To make changes.

What are you going to do with "I spent four years flooding channels, ddosing servers, and ruining networks." Just what will those bragging rights do for YOU? (And if you think you can put a positive spin on it by declaring yourself a "security expert", you're only fooling yourself. Out in the real world, you're about as much a security expert as your momma is a four star chef.)

Creating is money in the bank. You can put it on a resume. It will help you get into university. It will help you get a job. It will help you get a better job. It will help you have a better life.

No matter how good you are, its all about how you USE your knowledge.
