I know that netsplit took it off their system, but what if SearchIRC had a totally different listing page... where instead of it's listed by how many users, make it list by different IRCds.

Now, I understand why netsplit has taken it off... the amount of users using it for bad outweighed the ones using it for good... but if you could get your bot to read, for example "Unreal3.2.5" out of the connection notices and throw that under a heading called "Unreal IRCd" maybe, so instead of showing the patch levels it just shows the base version?

I understand it would be a little bit obnoxious with the code of the bot, but could also help provide more information for people to look at, without devulging enough to get their ircds exploited. (Hopefully you understand where this is coming from).

Or, the other thought I had ... Where the network sign up / login is, to add the network information ... have a menu like you do for services there, but for ircd?

Don't know if this makes all that much sense... but I've been searching through network after network trying to find anyone else using a particular ircd ... and it gets daunting :p

one advantage I can see from this notion is for the new-to-network-management user: seeing what IRCds are popular, and hence be able to get a sample set to see whats best for them (okay, Unreal is a clear leader here, but trends can change)

Unreal tends to be a n00b zone, and inclusive of windows servers... I try to steer clear of it.

I don't mind Unreal networks per-say, just prefer to stay clear...

Another thing that might be useful... have the boards customizable so that you don't have to read people who you have on a 'block' list so you don't get them in the 'Search posts since last visit'. That would be useful.

Hey marc,

that might help you (and probably a few others too Wink ) in case you`re using Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1045/

and all that without adding another thing to Jasons probably already big enough "to-do list" Wink

edit: When you've installed it (if you're going to) please report back if it is actually working since i didn't try it myself out yet.

We have over 30,000 visitors a day on this site. I have to weigh what functionality will be useful for the majority of the users. Then weigh in the risk of abuse of said functionality. I don't think the casual IRC user would care or know what to do with a server ircd version. That said, I think it would be useful for someone who had an exploit for "xxxx ircd" to use that search to find out what networks he/she should attempt to use the exploit on.

yes, that's why i suggested the base, not patch level.

eg: Unreal3.2.5 == Unreal.
eg: Unreal3.2-beta18 == Unreal.

(however, anyone stupid enough to still be running beta18 should be shot anyway)

Agreed....

And yeah i also agree base level IRCd as apposed to complete version would be fine. Although it wouldnt take long for the cretins out there to make a bot that could search for all the say Unreal servers then connect to each one idividually to check its version to compile a list of vunerable IRCd's for later abuse.

is it really that hard now? Unreal is a popular choice, and granted there are some networks still running 3.2.1 (I will not mention which networks), so a possible script/packet kiddie with enough time on their hands (not like they have much else to do, highly doubt the cretins have any social lives...) can just cruise round some of the bigger nets /version'n away to get a list of victims.

<sarcasm> That post clearly shows that you can read. </sarcasm>

This thread has NOTHING to do with which IRCd's are better and which arnt. It is about wanting to be able to search for networks by the IRCd they use.
