i just wonder - you got abusive user joe random and after he is evading ban #12312, doing the 500th clone-bot-flood-whatever-attack youre fed-up enough to write an email to his provider (knowing his original ip).

so - did anyone of you ever do this?

what kind of information did you include?

did you *ever* get anything out of it?

if so, what?

Hmm, this is iffy. Depends on the provider.
If he used a botnet to flood you, best you can do is contact his provider and send him the logs of what happened. I doubt most providers will do anything with it, but if theyre using botnets they might pay more attention to it. if not, atleast it gets filled away for next time they get a report.

We actually delt with this issue a few weeks back.

We banned a user, he returned again and again saying very rude things to us. I finally warned him if he continued his harassment we'd contact his internet service provider. We couldn't ban his entire ISP because we had multiple users from that one isp so it'd of been overkill just to deal with one person.

The ISP was very helpful actually as most ISP's have abuse policies clearly stating you cannot use their service to harass anyone which ban evasion is a form of harassment (well sorta but point being heh)

They asked for complete logs detailing all of his connections, time stamps etc. Last I heard he was removed from their services.

There are some who will just use BNCs if they want to harrass someone, thus hiding their ISP. Some rather malicious users will hijack "common-joe" PCs for their BNCs/proxies so complaining to the ISP of that "common-joe" computer user (who may or may not use IRC or even understand what IRC is) may get the wrong people in trouble. You should only complain to an ISP regarding an abusive user if you are CERTAIN that user is with that ISP

But given the person is most likely a kid they'll have to explain to their parents why their ISP dropped them.

Only if the kid is the one that did the attacking and not the one who clicked the link that infected his computer and made him the middle man for someone else's attack.

I agree with what was said above, while we as network owners want someone to pay for disrupting our network lets be sure who we are going after before we start shooting.

To address the original post: myself, I have filed a few complaints with ISPs regarding ongoing abusive behavior towards our server network (I through various means knew the person responsible was responsibe)
Anyway the stats:
1 to Comcast went unanswered. 1 to Verizon they answered me and said that they would look into it - cant say whether the person got board or booted but the attacks stopped in the next 2 weeks. 1 to AOL nothing back. So there you go 1 / 3 and the 1 is ify.

As far as I'm concerned, if your PC has been compromised and not cleaned within a certain period of time (whatever that may be) you deserve to have your ISP account terminated.

Kids can easily steal parents credit cards (I do that all the time) and buy a bunch of stuff....It only takes a few clicks to get a new isp.....

Most kids use aol or any isp that don't deal with abuse very good....

BNC's these days are pretty cheap....the cheapest I seen is 1$ and there are free ones too....

If your parents don't realise and discipline you, they're idiots. Same goes for any other parents out there.

Exactly how long do you propose they are allowed to notice themselves before they are suddenly classified as an idiot? 2 days? 2 weeks? Most people don't know about stuff like that for a month or so at least, depending on when their statements come in, and when the order was placed! Stop being so negative, it's very possible for a kid to order a new ISP and the parents not have a clue for WEEKS!

You're right that they might not have a clue until the credit card statement comes in, but that's irrelevant here, is it not?

It's also not being negative, it's called having a clue. Parents _should_ have an idea what their children are up to, and that includes making sure they don't steal their credit cards.

Try BOPM and you can set your clone session limit to like 3 or 2....
IRC Defender I think has a module for ban envasion..
Try banning the guys name so everytime he uses something like it it'll get banned automatically....

It doesn't take much skills to use any form of payment....

I am saying even a novice can get a new isp within couple minutes...

or they can use someone elses credit card without the person knowing it...
