|
|
| I run a LOCAL irc network of about 2,500 users and around 5,000-6,000 spontaneous users. Its has come to my attention that local police are using this network to find out who is providing alcohol to minors. My network ranges from ages 12 - 25. Is there anything I can do to stop the police from using this method to catch people doing this? Maybe a disclaimer of some sort? Is this entrapment? |

Well... if you try to prevent it you then become liable. I doubt you're gonna want to do that. "Cyber Cops" are not that uncommon in my experience. Generally in the past from previous experience they will usually e-mail the owner of the domain to let them know whats going on. Or contact an abuse committee if you have one.

| IMO there isnt much you can do unless you want to get yourself involved. This is the same reason ircd's that hide hostmasks can be a bad idea as well. |

You do reserve the right to deny access to anyone. Contact them, and ask what their hostnames are, and ban them. They should comply, no questions asked. Unless of course, they have a court behind them.
But, as Horizon said, I would let them do what they are going to do. |

| the bottom line is they're going to do what they want to do. i'm on a large local forum community and we deal with several cops. most of them are cool and contribute to the forum. but you dont really want to ruffle any feathers. and writing disclaimers doesnt automatically make it legally binding. you can say "no cops allowed" all you want, but its not going to be all that effective. |

| In the end it's alot better just to let 'em get on with it. Don't piss 'em off. |

Honestly this is the first I've heard of this. But, I would advise your users that chatting in a public channel is just like chatting in public-if people want to listen in, they will.
If these people know they are being watched, why do they continue to discuss these things when those people are present? Maybe they would stop getting the attention if they stopped discussing things that aren't legal, perhaps? |

mm i've got to be honest if thats all they have to do ( chase underage drinkers ) i wanna be one , what about the drunk drivers , what about the people who are beating others up because of alcohol, instead of the police being " desk jockeys" they should get of there back sides and catch some proper criminals. its a sad state of affairs if there going to police an irc channel in the hope that they will find undereage drinkers
just out of interest is it an american channel , if so why can young people buy guns and so forth but not drink ....... its a bit .. what the expression "arse about face " . at the end of the day it will always be an ongoing problem so it might be an idea to legalise it .
 banger serevr undernet surrey england channel #micros4u
good people thanks |

Hi,
Truly I'm convinced that there is only a selective amount of policement working on IRC, I don't think the entire force does that. But if you insist, you said:
| Quote: | | what about the people who are beating others up because of alcohol | Now, if the people would not have been drinking alcohol, they'd not be beating each other up. So if the police can do anything to keep young (illegal) drinkers from drinking, I'm all for it, it might pay off not being addicted to it later. (Not as if every young drinker will be an addict, though).
Let them do their job while we do ours... which is sleeping and doing homework .
