~ and & prefixes (for +q and +a) seem to be becoming more and more common on smaller IRC networks... I was wondering what the general opinion on these was. Are they a good thing? A bad thing? Don't care either way?

I know some clients (particularly smaller or older clients) have problems with them, and I've run into these problems myself on several clients for embedded devices (like Palm or Qtopia), and even several still-being-developed OSX clients.

So, what's the general consensus?

In my opinion, we have the channel hierachy of +h -> +o -> +a -> +q, might as well have prefixes to suit 'em...

Arent necissarily a bad thing, just still odd to me. Guess I grew up more on the bahamut type with just +ov so all those other modes are a little unormal in my eyes. They aren't all that bad though.

On my server, we just use the standard: +, %, @ (@ being symbols for AOp and higher)

Personally I'm no fan of the extra prefixes. The modes aren't standard, and neither are the prefixes.. plus they just look weird imo :p

they look good in a well structured room, if you see someone active from every rank. & (super op) is handy because they cant kick each other. saves on abuse like normal op mode. halfop gives you basic things to the channel but restricts you on most.

so yeah, it's a good thing if used right

Not giving channel operator status to morons also saves on abuse, and doesn't require a plethora of new modes.

what magpie said. although because people op idiots & and ~ are needed to help provent takeovers and stuff. if you give & and ~ to stupid untrustworthy people then you have the same problem as opping everyone (with @).

I don't care. But it can be irritating. I prefer @, % and +. I don't have any problems with & or ~, but i've disabled on my network, because when you give a chatter +q, he will be still protected, without any prefix.
And at second, some javaapplets doesn't know that modes, and that may give some problems.

Sorry for my bad English Wink

Hi. Yeah, I still lurk occasionally. Much less involved with IRC these days though.

In my opinion they are bad. Here is the reason why:

When you have prefixes for +a and +q, they are mutually exclusive. They become another level directly above +o, +a and +q indirectly infer +o. As well as breaking some clients, this can restrict the granularity of control you can give to your users.

For example, if you want to give someone both +h and +a (yes i've had need for this) to make them halfop, but protect them from kicks and dehalfops... or if you just want to make someone +a to protect them from kicks (nothing more) then this is impossible, because as soon as you give +a, they get ops. You might want to protect someone *without* giving them ops too, especially in the case of bots, etc.

This is why unreal gives the option of choosing between prefixes and no prefixes, amongst the fact that some clients do not support it. I would like to point out that many channel bots (e.g. eggdrop) do not support prefix_aq, because to them, +o is +o, if you give someone +a, they do not no that that also means they have the +o too Smile

Hope this explains my reasoning Very Happy
