|
|
During the next few weeks, SearchIRC will be updated to support more than one language (English). This is a time consuming process that will take a long time to complete.
The end product of this is the ability to switch languages on the fly.
While we're not yet ready for translations to be made, we will be needing translators soon - as such, I'd like to start a thread where people can volunteer to translate. On the languages page, we will note who did the translation (if you so wish).
Translation guidelines:
A translation is not a word for word substitution from English to language N, the translation needs to be taken with the proper context of the sentence. For example, in bablefish, it will translate "server" to "waiter", so whenever reading a french to english translation, "IRC server" comes out as "IRC waiter". This is exactly the kind of translation we do NOT want :)
- Don't use a heavy, staid, or arrogant tone; translations should be upbeat and friendly
- Avoid awkward or unprofessional wording
- Try to capture the essence of the message. Don't translate literally or word-for-word.
- Do not translate product names or services, such as "SearchIRC" or "MyChannel".
- If you can't come up with a way to translate a phrase while preserving its tone just please leave it in English.
Please post here if you wish to help. I will also need to know what language you can translate.

Thanks for the posts so far guys.
Also keep in mind that it is better to have more than one translator for each language. No one person is perfect with their language skills, a collaboration of at least two people per language is the ideal setup.
Keep them coming!
I'm estimating a week or two before I'm able to make use of any translators btw. |

I'm ready for testing.
My goal isn't for a completly translated SearchIRC website, but rather enough of the site to be translated that users who speak languages other than English will be able to navigate and make use of the site.
Please see this template file for details:

OpTimuS-PrImuS, thanks!
One line you did forget to translate:
$lang_set_to = "Language: English";
Since I already have the DNS setup for fr.searchirc.com, you can see the result of your work so far on http://fr.searchirc.com
I'll setup proper dns for everything in the morning :) |

Okay, after reviewing the translated site, it appears to me that I still need to add more variables, so please hold off on additional translations until I post back here with an update :)
Thank you |

IMPORTANT: Please do not make any further translations.
After some discussion, it's apparent that more text will need to be added to the template in order for the non-english users to be able to use the website.
Thus I am still taking names for translators, but do not need any immediate translations done until more text is added to the templates.
Thank you |
