Of those of you that use mirc, how many of you have paid for your copy? Remember this is anonymous, i'm just interested in what percentage of people actually spend money to be on irc (i personally have a copy of mIRC i've never paid for, my client of choice is the free silverex xchat (http://www.silverex.org).

im at a middle line here about this one. I once paid for an early version of mIRC (probably in the 4.x series) and that was before I used MSN Chat (which wasted a good few yrs of my life). Since I got a hold of mIRC 6.12 (after I couldn't access said chat anymore), I used a keygen as my original key had been lost into the mists of time, and wasn't prepared to spend another X amount of dollars to re-reg it.

mIRC is a one time purchase. your license covers all versions present a future.

Thank you for evaluating mIRC. mIRC is shareware, which means that it can be evaluated for 30 days, after which it needs to be registered if you wish to continue using it. The registration is a one time payment of US$20.00, and licenses you to use future versions of mIRC as well.

Losing your key isn't a good enough excuse. Khaled will happily send you another copy of your key, if you really did purchase the software.

khaled lost out on a lot of money once. I was starting up an mIRC bot hosting company (because you see a lot of companies for eggdrop hosting, but none for mIRC bot hosting). I was going to run a special online script to allow people to update their bot's coding, shutdown/restart their mIRC.exe process, etc.

anywho, to make a long story short, this was going to be hosted on a dedicated win2k server machine, and I emailed him once about purchasing 100 mIRC licenses (yes, $2000 worth of mIRC licenses), and he never bothered to email me back.

ever since then I have never bothered to even attempt to purchase an mirc license from him. i just use keygens if i get annoyed enough at the time period i have to wait for the registration reminder to go away.

How did it happen that my two postings I wrote under this thread, and the answers dissappeared since yesterday? Have they been deleted?

However, my point here was that I personally would not, and would not want anybody else to pay for mirc, because the guy practically stopped the development, and just lives of collecting his shareware fees. He doesnt _work_ anymore on this client, and this means he doesnt care att all about the wast community which gathered around mirc, so he shouldnt be supported monetarily any more.

Besides that, he has IMHO profited too much (probbably millions, the irc world is "addicted" to mIRC) on such a small shareware program, most of which he wrote in the mid 90s, and only lightly maintained since then. I think that mIRC, for this reasons, should be considered public domain (until it enters public domain legally) and copied/pirated at will.

So let me see if I understand. I disagree with my local supermarket's business practices. They charge very high prices and they really don't care about the customers, only about money. Therefore, when I go shopping this weekend, I'm entitled to steal from them? That is one of the most flawed arguments I've ever heard!

I don't like mIRC, and I like Khaled even less. However, this does not give me the right to steal his property. Just because you do not like someone does not mean you are free to commit crimes against them.

I agree with everything you said about how mIRC is managed. I don't think Khaled cares even 1% about the users, he cares only about the money. And I agree, he has made far too much money off such a basic program. However, the solution isn't to steal mIRC, it's to "vote with your feet." I switched to Klient and I'm much happier with it (and yes I registered it). If you're fed up with mIRC, then you should look at other clients. You should not be stealing Khaled's work.

Just because you disagree with the way he runs his business does not give you, nor anyone else, the right to rob from him.

Theres's a difference between stealing from a supermarket, and using a installed program beyond the trial period without paying the shareware fee, and you know that this cant be directly compared. Well, I personally (and many others) dont't consider ignoring copyrights "stealing" or "theft". Nothing is stolen here. A freely available and distributed program is kept using and the licence text ignored. How can you call this stealing when he doesnt miss any "stolen" goods?

It isn't his "property". Its his (doubtable) legal right to deny everyone on the planet to copy this software, but this right can easily be ignored by almost anyone because its practically impossible to enforce such an abdictation on so many people, to use it nonetheless.

Nobody is "robbing" anyone here. (You do notice that your analogies get more and more lurid with every sentence? Stealing --> robbing. Whats next? Abduction of code? Terrorizing Khaled?) Everyone not paying for mIRC is simply ignoring some soooo easy (click of a mouse button) to ignore rights, because they dont feel that Khaled does deserve to get monetarily support for doing basically nothing for this client and the surrounding community. When its sooo damn easy to "rob" him, that even a computer illiterate grandmother can do it, (without even knowing that she just "robbed" him), than he should do more to convince his users that it would pay off for them (in terms of features, maintenance and so on) to support him and the development. (but he doesnt.) He depends on his users supporting him _voluntarily_, because its impossible to enforce his "copyrights" when none of the users cares about such "rights" which forbid them to do something on their own computers.
