I hope this is the right forum for this, if not please feel free to move it. I'm looking at getting a decent shell provider for a IRC network I help administrate. The planned shell will most likely be used as a hub and not a leaf. Our network currently sees anywhere from ~500 to ~1000 users. Although usually around ~700 average.

I've been looking at these providers from other threads, out of these choices does anyone have any advice/comments and so on? Also, at which point would it be a good idea to start looking at dedicated servers for this task.

Thanks guys Smile!

I recommend Lomag. They are fast and stable. Reboots are limited to required upgrades with uptimes easily reaching hundreds of days. You'll have 1024 discripters and can have hub or leaf. This has 250MB of space and many other features.

If you only need a litte space and no features, Lomag owns another provider called shellux http://www.shellux.net and you still get 1024 discripters and your choice of leaf or hub .. but only 50MB space, 3 bg procs but for only $15/mo.

Both accounts are worth the money, I've been a very happy customer of Lomag and shellux for years. Infact I'm so happy with them that I pay for my shells yearly.

Just out of curiosity, how large is the network [and server] you're hosting on Lomag? Also I didn't see it mentioned on the site, but I'm thinking about running my services there. I don't see anything against it...

Currently I use it on a new net with very few users .. but I run it on a net with a few thousand users total as a hub.

Yes, you have 3 background process. Only 1 can be an IRCd .. the others can be proxies, eggdrops, BNC and Services.

Odd, it says in their FAQ. "IRCD Shells are initially alloted 100 kbps of bandwidth (Level 1). Should an IRCD Shell consume greater than the alloted bandwidth they will be asked to upgrade to the next Level of bandwidth or to limit the users on their server to keep their ircd's usage within the threshold of alloted bandwidth." I think we'd blaze past that. /me wonders if there is an error.

Captain Kirk,

lomag has been great, i've been subscribed to their services for a couple years and never had 1 problem, it's so great in fact i bought a dedicated shell. I am very happy with it thus far. Anyhow i have plenty of space on my server and i need somewhere to link, sounds like the answer to both our problems. Just let me know what ya think and get back with me. I have root access to this box and i can do just about anything i want. Thanks.

when you get as many as 1000 users, you should be looking at getting a dedicated box.

Lomag recently has been nothing but netsplits to my network and lots of ping outs. However, they do say that they'll fix that this month with planned network upgrades, but it's too late now, they lost our business. We just got a dedicated server.

i can personal recomend lomag and their other compnays such as shellux and others, my ircd had 400+ days uptime on it untill the system was rebooted for a kernel upgrade, shellux is also now on a new line/switch what sems to be very good, i've had no downtime with them apart from the one reboot, and they have good support (email only tho)

Since pyroshells closed, if anyone here was a customer, they can go to www.thenuke.net to purchase service and put the coupon pyroshells25 for a 25% discount.
