Power-Hunger

It seems lately that IRC is attracting more and more power-hungry people. What happens is that they just got this thing called mIRC and a website tells them to join a certain channel with like 100 users on it. After a little bit they find out what the %s, @s, &s, and ~s mean and they want it because the people with those symbols have the power to kick people and stuff like that and they want to be able to do that.

So they find out about ChanServ and make their own channel. They sit in there with one or two people and are bored as hell after about 10 minutes. They don't realize that you make an IRC channel when you already have either an idea with a few followers or a company or service that needs one. You don't open one for the hell of it because nobody comes.

So, being the lazyasses they are, they beg for an O:Line on the network until the administration gets sick of them and bans them from the official channels. Then they go around to other nets doing the same thing.

After a while they realize this is going nowhere so they download an IRCd and start their own stupid network with a userbase of 3 and O:Lines for everyone.

That's what I see happening, so uh, just post your thoughts on it I guess.

Why do you assume that there is no such thing as a network that has no power hungry opers?

I have none on my net .. and I'm not a liar.

I'm not talking only about the people you HAVE given O:Lines to because I assume that they aren't power-hungry, otherwise you wouldn't have given them an O:Line if you have a half a brain.

I'm talking more about op-beggers than abusive IRCops.

oh ... in that case still none .. because no one has yet to beg for an O:Line on my network ... but op begging is nothing close to new. I'm sure there are just as high of a percentage now as there was a few years ago.

Please keep in mind that I call op begging a persistant reminder than someone is interested in an O:Line ... not those that express an interest and are either helpful or never ask again.

Well, when I did run a server, when people asked for an O:line, I offered them a "God line" instead. I never had anyone say they didn't want it. But after I added the G:line, I think they changed their mind Smile

Op begging is a part of IRC. I can't imagine IRC without the occasional op begger. But I do agree IRC is becoming too power hungry. I don't know how many networks I've seen fall apart because 1-2 guys decide they need to make all the decisions. And regardless of what everyone else thinks, those 2 guys always get their way (the network I'm referring to knows who I'm talking about). I've seen it happen many times, and it's a shame. But, I guess it's kind of human nature. I remember reading somewhere that from birth, people begin to develop one primary goal, to have power over other people. So I guess it's only natural that it happens on IRC too, but it's still a shame...

Power is nothing without a purpose.

For some the purpose is to strut around and bask in the admiration of all who recognize that they 'have the power'.

For others the purpose is to maintain a facility that serves a need of a given community.

personally i've never had anyone ask me for an o-line on my network, but then again i run things a bit different to most, no one on there gets o-lines at all.

i've got some custom services modules that allow a certain few access to certain functions like kicking/baning etc when needed, but they can still only see what normal users see, so ip addresses etc are all masked from everyone. it also allows different levels so that they can't kick/ban others that have the same access to the services module as themselves which helps cut back on any abuse.

That was quite awhile ago... when I was feeling mean.

Generally I have a very low patience for O:line beggers. I generally use a 3 strike rule:
1st beg: tell them to stop pming me.
2nd beg: kick them from the channel they are on with me
3rd beg: ban them from all channels they are using to contact me, and put their hostmask on pm ignore.

Suffice it to say, I've had one or two extremely stupid people ask for ops in the past,
but I mostly deal with it by simply stating "you do not have the requisite knowledge, ability,
training, attitude or level of experience to become an oper". If they persist past that I'll either
/ignore or /ban them (note, channel ban not network/server ban).

Yeah, you get them, but in my experience, they go away pretty quickly (though not always
volantarily) when they realise they are quite simply not going to get what they ask for.
