Erm, cygwin is an emulator for unix under windows... not a irc services package...
How about srvx? |

| We use Anope because they are highly customizable through the use of modules that are very easy to load and with a large section to choose from. That way you can use popular Services without being just like every other network. |

Maybe he confused it with the rarely-updated Cygnus Services (too which I can't remember the URL - or if said URL is even functional ). |

Anope SVN version, with
Current Module list:
Module: bs_seen [(null)] <--- much better then the default !seen
Module: bs_deoponbotkick [1.00] <----- prevents eggdrop/services fights (I mod services itself to make chanserv op botserv bots, that way they don't op themselves and trigger modehack alerts in eggdrop)
Module: ms_cowner [1.0] <---- I run a small net, it's useful to be able to contact all founders at once.
Module: ns_allmodesonid [1.01] <---- to set all users +R on id, to limit the effect of spambots and to encourage people to use services.
Module: ns_noticeunregistered [1.02] <---- to encourage people that are migrating here from efnet to reg their nicks/channels.
Module: ns_listbyemail [(null)] <---- to detect ban evaders who register multiple NS accounts.
Module: ns_resetpass [(null)] <---- to cut down on the amount of "please reset my pwd" requests my opers have to deal with.
Module: os_notidlist [1.13] <---- helps detect botnets, and lets us encourage the usage of services.
8 Modules loaded.
I use Anope becuase it is flexible in that it supports many third party modules and add-ons.
I use it becuase it supports botserv, which saves us a lot on having to use eggdrops, and is generally high quality.
I also use Anope becuase unlike IRCServices (ime), the coding team actually listens seriously to what you suggest and you can get the features you want without having to code them yourself.
Since I run a bahamut-based network, I need some kind of services program that can do network wide bans (as the ircd only has local klines). I also like the idea of channel and nick ownership. Cygnus and Magick look like they've not been updated in years, and Anope has better module support and flexibility then IRCServices, hence I use it.
NeoStats most recent stable: neostats, connectserv, opsb, secureserv, statserv.
I use statserv to track user numbers (and to detect when numbers rise too quickly, indicating some kind of attack), and for network maps.
I use connectserv to monitor kills and oper modes.
I use opsb as my opm, becuase it works and it checks opm.blitzed.org.
I use secureserv to warn users who use broken copies of mirc (many, many users are guilty of this).
I would use BOPM instead of neostats, but bahamut doesn't support any way for a normal ircd to send network-wide connection noticies to a client. Also, I want secureserv and statserv.
I could run bopm with it's server perl script...... and I probably should, as it is a better opm then OPSB is, but neostats is far more convenient.
So, that's what I run :) Bahamut(1.4.36p3), Anope(SVN), and NeoStats(stable) |

We currently use Anope, but im working on winse so one day we can change over!
Used to use ircservices, they are really nice... before that, tried cygnus (habber.net/services) which, btw are now officially dead and before that, auspice! (which sucked arse) |

Imho, there are certian things that are just required in order to run a decent network.
One of them is an open proxy monitor of some kind, usually a service client like bopm or NeoStats' opsb. Chanserv, nickserv etc are great bonuess and imho a good idea, but I respect networks that choose not to use them for ideological reasons.
Networks without any kind of opm software, however....... are networks I will take seriously or use. With the sheer quantity of abuse that occurs via open proxies on IRC nowadays, some kind of opm should be mandatory for all networks.

| Ashen, this thread specificlly talks about IRC Services .. not Oper Services. IMO there should have been a 'none' option. |

1) IMO, an opm counts as an IRC service. It's a monitoring service - that uses IRC. Hence IRC Service, surely?
2) According to the topic starter:

NeoStats
operStats
Others????? |
'Oper services' such as operstats seem to be included in the question. Thus it is reasonable to assume that even if you want to draw a line between user services and 'Oper Services', that the question is about both.
| the official NeoStats FAQ section 1.1 wrote: |
1.1 What is NeoStats?
NeoStats is based on GeoStats by Johnathan George net@lite.net.
NeoStats is a set of IRC Services that can perform many many
different functions.
|
The description of the program goes out of its way to point out it is a set of IRC Services.
It says it is an IRC service, it acts as an IRC service, the question appears to include it as an IRC service...
The first two lines of the FAQ confirm this :

C'mon - Even if the distinction between IRC Services and Oper Services holds up (which I doubt)...... then the question was about both.
My point is that all networks, if they are to have a hope of combatting abuse, must run an OPM of some kind.
Chanserv, Nickserv etc are optional (though imho, a very good idea) - but some kind of OPM is a must-have.
Imho a 'none' option would be an easy cop out - far better would be for people to say exactly what they run/don't run and why....... saying 'none' assumes that you're working with the same definition of services as everyone else, which, as has been shown above, is often not the case. |
