In case you didn't notice, he's actually asking HOW TO DOWNLOAD stuff, not whether somebody out there thinks it's bad to download warez.
FYI there are a good lot of non-copyrighted things to download on IRC.
This is definitely the most useless response to a valid question that I've ever seen. |

As a helper on one of the largest IRC networks (140k user peak) in world I can truthfully tell you that 99% of the users that ask "How do I download" are looking for warez. In fact at one point in time somewhere around Jan 2003 I've experienced that as much as 80% of the users asked "How do I download". I've seen users that could barely spell IRC want to run and XDCC bot. It's sad when you hear the term " a friend said I can download movies with this [mIRC]" more than hearing "How do I change my nick".
So jason's reply is perfectly valid. I can tell directly from your reply that you have obviously not sat in a help channel on any good size network and answered user questions, or you would already know this. |

Riiiiight. Next you'll tell me "warez" is a Chinese word for food.
I've been online a long time. I'm not a gullable newbie who has no idea how things work.
The chances that he's looking to download something that isn't pirated from IRC is little to none. There are a ton of IRC script websites, a plethora of shareware repositories. Looking at IRC as a source for legitimate downloads is just not a normal thing to do. You'd have to find a random person on a random network in a random channel who has this random file, and they'd have to want to spend their bandwidth sending it to you. Add to it that there are no legitimate "irc downloads" websites - every single one of the sites that index xdcc bots/fserves that I have seen are there only to facilitate piracy.
I back up my statement by saying in my ~5 years running a major help channel on Undernet, I can't recall a single time someone was looking for help with downloading that wasn't also sitting in warez channels or wanting to get warez.
The reason I gave that user the FAQ url, is because SearchIRC is not here to help you download anything, legitimate or not. We don't index any fserves or xdccs. Trying to use SearchIRC to download stuff is a waste of time since it's not setup for that and it never will. |

| There are plenty of other places where you can get info on this subject but SIRC is not one of those places. It's a sad time now when alot of people only use IRC for warez. |

| I know you guys are going to slaughter me but is there another use for mIRC? I never sat down and read everything but basically I just thought it was used for downloading stuff. I dont see how you could chat on that when there are a million other FREE chat stuff out there. Hmm maybe I am just being a Newbie and don't know anything about it since I just downloaded it about 7 minutes ago. |
