i'd appreciate it if we had the ability to search through all the networks/servers depending on their ircd version..

thanks

The question is -- how useful is such a feature to the general public?

SearchIRC is meant for the masses. It's not meant for the programmer who wants to know how popular his ircd is :)

If you can show me this would be a feature many users would want, I will consider it.

not only would it be handy for a programmer, but someone who is looking at how different ircds perform and how they serve their users. some people might be attracted to servers due to it having a unique ircd, unlike others. some might only like/use ircx or conference room. its basically the same as the services section you have on the network profile pages

Do it the same way you request services info-have the person in charge of the server entry add that info if they'd like.

U, the info on the pages IS what we get from the admins on the network submission form, or what I can find when visiting networks to check them out. We don't include the services version, because it would take up too much of our time to upgrade 300 networks every time a new version is released.

The services section for the networks can be a LOT better. After talking to admins and users I have some ideas about what we need to do. Give me a few days to brainstorm with Jason. :)

Meanwhile, if you have any more input about what you would like to see in the services section, lets hear your ideas.

I wouldn't go by precise version. I think it would suffice to say "Unreal3.1" or "Unreal 3.2" for example.

I don't think you understand.

Including what services a network runs is one thing, but it's another matter completely to include version numbers which change on an almost daily basis.

Including any version info means the data has a limited lifespan, one that is very short.

I understand you, thats why I said use generalaties. Unreal3.1 and Unreal3.2, for example, have alot of releases, but they are still what they are, just 2 types of the IRCd.

No need to go into subtypes like Unreal3.1.5.1, just call anything in that series Unreal3.1.x. Same for 3.2, no need to mention what beta, its just Unreal3.2.x.

Don't have to get general about SPECIFIC versions, just Unreal is an example of one with 2 different versions. Otherwise you could just say "hybrid" or whatever. Version is not really important, just the main series is what I was saying. I wouldn't expect you guys to track exact versions, just say what IRCd in general. Same with services, for example I run anope. Thats sufficent, don't need to go into versions. The only reason you have to with Unreal is there is 2 versions, but you don't have to go beyond Unreal3.1 or Unreal3.2, is what I'm saying.

bad idea. dont see any real use to the end user.. the folks who post here arent the typical users. they're the only people (and they make up a minority) of those interested in version numbers and whatnot. to regular old joe user, it would just be extra confusing info.

You don't get what I'm saying, I'm saying NOT to post version numbers. Except for Unreal, but only in the sense you tell them if they are using 3.1 or 3.2.

I'm saying NOT to post version numbers cept for unreal, and in unreals case, only indicate 3.1 or 3.2, not any sub versions Smile That would be too hard, they change every week anyway.

The server version is shown upon connecting. I guess I could store them, but as I said previously, this type of thing is just statistical in nature. It's actual usefulness is still unknown. Will the channel owner of #50+ care about ircd versions and check it every day?

The goal of SearchIRC is community building. We have a LOT of work on our plates. Those involved with the project spend many hours each day on it. Once we're done with the main objectives, little things like storing server versions can easily be added -- these things are trivial to add.. but take up valuable time that could have been spent developing other things :)

This is an ongoing project that grows with each day. I like the suggestions, keep them coming.

There ya go. :) One of the things I would be most concerned with when releasing the version of the server software used on a network, is security. New versions come out and *splat* goes a server, then it becomes a race between the kiddies who found the bug and the admins who have to patch it... I wouldn't want to provide them with a list of which networks are running what.
