My daughter Liz was sitting at a stoplight this morning when her new car was rearended by someone going 45 mph. She's a little sore and shaken up, but otherwise okay. The car, however, didn't fare so well:

Do you believe her insurance company wants to fix it? They say its "borderline totalled" but because of the high value of the car they are going to pay for repairs.

The insurance company got an estimate-repair is cheaper than replacing, thats why they are doing it.

They will do whatever is the cheaper option.

As bad as it looks, the damage appears to have been taken mostly by the trunk and the bumper. As long as the frame is unscathed, they aren't likely to declare it totaled.

This is quite unfortunate.

Update.

Liz emailed saying she was picking up her car last night. At long last, all the repairs are complete. I got this in the morning:

well no car
I went to get it
Engine did not start – finally got it started to realize it had absolutely no gas! Had to fill it myself! That’s absurd! They absolutely refused to refuel it for me too by the way!!!

Next was the sunroof
Sunroof doesn’t open or close – none of the controls work!!
They told me to drive it around for a bit – and that would make it work again!!! What a stupid idea!

Then came the brakes
Which I didn’t have!!!!!
No brakes! I had to put my foot to the floor to get it to stop!!! That is ridiculous for a car with 4100 miles!!!!

Then came the steering
I had to turn my steering wheel to go straight – now tell me if that sounds right!!! NO!!!!
Alignment is horribly off!

Next came the blinkers
Again – which I didn’t have!!! NO BLINKERS?!?!?!?
Cars were swerving and slamming their brakes to avoid me which made me wonder if I had blinkers at all - - low and behold – nope I don’t!

Of course they said that the car works fine and not to be concerned – so at the auto body shop it sits – b/c I refuse to take it w/out being fixed!!!!!

sounds like some litigation could come out of this if the shop refuses to make things right. hope it all works out. i know how it feels to be without a car because of a wreck.

Also brings up a point on how badly mechanics treat women. They treat women as though they don't know a thing about cars. hrhr

Anyone who knows a thing or two about cars knows that any mechanical or electrical problem can be easily fixed by just "driving around for a bit"!

Some examples:

The last time I had a flat tire, I ignored it and after 10 minutes, the problem went away.

When my oil levels were low in my car, I drove around a bit, and 5,000 miles later, the engine quit needing oil.

That no one was hurt.

Vehicles can be replaced, lives cant.
