There are thousands of tiny networks on IRC. I think it's time an effort was established to consolidate the networks forming a larger network.

There are some principals of this endeavor that I must state however.

First, every entity involved in this effort is equal. Nobody will be dominant over the amount of users or servers they have on their network.

Second, quality over quantity is what matters. The behaviour of the users matter, not the quantity of the users/servers. Abuse cannot be tolerated.

Third, everyone has to agree on the issues before anything happens. At present, this is only a discussion to see who might be interested in working on such an initiative.

I have preferences toward EFnet ircd's (hybrid, ratbox, csircd) and DALnet ircd's (bahamut, NOT dreamforge). Unreal may be considered if valid arguments are made. (The services argument does not work. Services can be ported.)

At present, the network I am on runs a modified version of hybrid-7.0.1 called ShadowIRCd... again, this would also be a preference on my part.

None the less however, the software and policies involved would have to be voted on and discussed.

Oh one more thing. Please note that this is not a request to be taken over by a larger network. That is not my intention. (I do not take kindly to hostile takeover attempts.)

I have also set up a forum that can be explicitly used for discussing this at http://www.nenolod.net/phpBB2/ Smile

how would this differ from a merger? (which I'm sure most would not want)

A merger would involve being swallowed up into a larger network... i.e. their is a dominant group involved.

Under this scheme, everything would be started out from the beginning. The goal here is to make a network with solid philosophies and staff behind it's operation. Smile

I like the "starting fresh" idea .. but IMHO people that start networks do so because they are unhappy with the net they are on. Mebbe it's a power thing ... mebbe no one can decide what software to use ... what policies to enforce. This way the person starting the network can do what they feel is right.

I'm not opposing your idea, just concerned of it's outcome.

Like i said, there are presently problems on the network I am involved with and as of late it has gone to chaos, therefore i think it might be good to start new with determined policies and software.

Perhaps the irc-ag would be interested in this idea. I feel they may need a centralized place to gather.

This isn't a new concept, and since you're the one with the idea, I would guess you would be the one in overall control.

In that case, its still a merger.

Incorrect. I dont want control of any of this... control would have to be spread equally... Smile

With network policy's being vastly different from network to network.. I feel there would be no real way for everyone to come to a concencus as to what network policy would be and the direction to take the network.
U is right, this is not a new idea and it will never work.

60 years ago breaking the sound barrier wouldn't work either.
