I'm starting to think about channel options ... sort of like channel modes, but applicable to SearchIRC. For instance, +s in a channel makes it hidden. What about a +s to prevent SearchIRC from listing your channel, but still allowing it to be seen on your network? Or, lets say you want to lock your channel comments so that no one can post...

I'm thinking about doing it with a few characters in your channel topic, like:

<SearchIRC:Modes>

But you wouldn't want to use up so many letters of your topic, so:

<S:modeshere>

e.g; To set +s, /topic <S:s>

Comments, suggestions? What other options would you find useful?

Sounds like a great idea!!

but I don't see any reason why to hide your channel from being displayed. if You want to hide it , just put it on +s (on the IRC server)

Perhaps , if it is possible, to manage alle the channels (from your network) Like placing them in a category or modifying some incorrect data, or deleting a channel when it is secret or non existant.

I think allowing admins to select in the control panel what chans are listed would be the better option. SIRC has the ability to delete the lists of chans...so, so should admins!

I really like this idea but something is niggling me about it.

When i first read it i thought "hmmmm" because sometimes when i nosy through my nets list here i cringe at some of the topics posted and feel like it doesn't reflect the "feel" of the network, and people looking for a new home might see them and thing "no way". So having the ability to dictate which channel can be viewed or not interested me.

Then i thought... freedom of speech (my pet topic) and also the service searchirc offers channels, not just irc networks. It's free advertising for channels too, so if we allow those channel on our network, we should allow them the services that come with that, and searchirc is one.

Sooooooo to summarise my waffling.. i think it's a great idea if it's a channel option and not an admin/oper command (if that makes sense), allowing channel ops/founders to decide as opposed to net admins.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this being an opt-in option as opposed to an opt-out option. If people wanted their channels to be indexed they'd include [x] (or some such) at the start of the topic, if they didn't, they wouldn't be indexed Wink

angelic, you already have complete control over the channel topics on your network. Changing them on SearchIRC doesn't change them on your network. Thus if channel topics are a problem, you can already fix/modify them.

Also, it is not possible to have SearchIRC functional if it was opt in. It's hard enough to get in contact with thousands of IRC administrators. It's beyond the scope of the project to get in touch with millions of users.

could also have "p" private, only registered logged in users can view your channel.

Cant u limit the list of channels to that are registered (+r)? At least those r the ones that the network staff can control or responsible of to an extend.

We are a Christian network and got plenty of sex channels created by spam bots and ended up getting them listed in searchirc. (Thanks Mary, for removing them.)

I would like to have an optional mode for ircds that allows only registered users to create new channels (not joining already registered channels), it can prevent flooding too, hope someone will come out with a module..

You should contact the creators of your IRCd with that suggestion. Or have the module coded, but that costs money :)
