I run a small network, any ideas on how to get some users?

As the topic says, I run a small IRC server running the Unreal IRCD. Anyone got any ideas on how to get some users to join?

I can tell you how to NOT get users: spamming other networks. That will cause you more trouble than good. Most of the time it will earn you a quick kline-but some servers that get spammed will do more, like attack your network-which isn't good for your bandwith if you have limits, and not good for any users you have now, constant attacks will drive them away.

Its going to take a while. If you're stable and offer a good product, you'll get people to join, but I have been running my network for 21 months now and only have 550 global. I gained all of them by the core people telling friends, who then told friends, etc.

It takes a long time unless you have money to invest into advertising. Basically just get whoever is on your network now to put links to the networks website, and to tell all their buddies about it.

If your network is unstable or isn't up all the time for any reason though, it will be much harder to maintain users-they will want a server they can connect to at any time-if its not there, they will go to one that is, thats the bottom line. Make sure you're as stable as possible.

maybe they're updating or something. or maybe my isp sucks. which is highly possible. whats an ip i could connect to so i can check it out?

Actually you are right, one DNS server is down. I have posted something (including an alternate connection IP) on the network outages page..

His server is linked with mine...if you cant get that one to dns, you can connect to irc.webchatting.com to check out the network. Thanks guys.

Necron merged with Webchatting, and eventually its domain name on its servers and website stopped working. Recently Webchatting and Netpunks merged, so information about the network and its channels can be found under http://searchirc.com/network/netpunks

Well my guess would be that you should not spam for your network, and you should ask your friends if they want to join, that is a start, I am running my own network as well and I started by asking my friends if they wanted to join, and then they asked their friends to join, so its like that. Your friends will get their friends and thats how its go, however you need to make something that will interest users.
