Perhaps you could be a bit more elaborate with the explanation. First off, what ircd are you using and perhaps services (probably not releveant if it's what I think, but I'll ask anyways). Second off, when you do a /list, can you see a channel? If it's a channel that you cannot see they're joining you would have to catch the nickname of a client when it logs onto your server (via ircd notices or services) and do a whois on it to see where it's joining.

I'm going to make a educated guess that you may be running unreal, and whatever the clients are, they're joining a channel with double # in front, which dosen't show up normally on a channel listing. If so, getting a nickname while a client is online and in the channel and doing a /whois is probably the answer you are looking for.

Channels listed with a name of "*" in /list output are channels with channel mode +p normally.

If you don't want them showing in list use +s instead.

Channels with ## normally show as if they were any other channel unless your CLIENT displays them differently. mIRC is a known client to do silly things with channels with ## like not showing them for example. Which has sadly led a few miss-informed people to believe ## is a way to hide channels from /list output.

Well, I was never completly sure which factor actually hid the channel, although in my years of being a irc operator, I've done listings while opered and had channels that used ## still not show up. After having ran into this a number of times I made the assumption it was that use of ## that hid the channel from the listing, even to opers. Perhaps I will take the time to play with this a bit more. Thank you Jobe for the knowledge.

I remember coming across the option many years ago when I first started using mIRC... had to dig into the help files to find it again, but here goes:

Tools -> Channels List (Ctrl + L for you shortcut lovers like me) -> Hide non-alphanumeric channels (checkbox) -> "Get List!"

Should fix the problem Wink

You know, as long as I've used Mirc now, you'd think I'd of already knew that by now. Guess even us old school irc users can learn something every once in awhile. Thanks Pingbad, I appreciate the help.

I suppose I'm the only mIRC user that never has problems seeing ##Channels .. they have always shown for me.

The only thing I can think of is the old /list bug in mIRC that did weird things to the list overall and not specficlly to ##Chans .. about 12 years ago I made an alias that replaced /list with /quote list and that seems to have bypassed whatever /list bug ever existed.

Out of curiousity, which version of mIRC do you use? I never noticed the * channels in the list until today, and it appears like my favourite network is crawling with them. A couple of java clients, including one for mobile phones, can't show them at all. Did you customise your mIRC in a way that allows you to view ## channels?

I never said I've had a problem with channel display. My message was that I remembered an option so one could view all the channels, but had to dig thru the help files to find it again (I disabled the option the second I found it when I first started using mIRC, and have never enabled it since)

I removed the "Hide non alphanumeric channels" option, which put the *'s into the list. With the box checked, it is as if they never existed.
