Cutting to the chase
us

Unreal
Anope
Neostats

global user count varies between 50-85
been around for a little over 2 years.

you
Unreal (obviously)
our services
don't really care about stats, so if you'd rather use yours, that's fine.
no Xdcc, warez, all that stuff that's usually not allowed.

and you must have more users than you have ircops. considerably more actually (that should disqualify 1-manned nets, and bot nets.)

you can keep your domain, your staff, your money, and your joys. Or you can use ours?

Post back or pm me or something, I dunno if I'm allowed to post links and it's not worth finding out the wrong way Wink

In your poll you missed the correct answer.

The "best" OS is the one that suits your needs the best. Best is an objective opinion. What's best for me may not be best for you.

I have no "best" as all of them have strengths and weaknesses and in most cases any OS is missing something I need.

Speaking from first hand...

for serious network routing and security, Windows (even the server-class edition of the OS) is pathetically useless where Linux (RHEL) does the job nicely.
for productivity/development/general use, windows has the edge if only because the vast majority of commercial-grade software packages are designed for a Win32 environment.
for IRCd hosting, FreeBSD hands down - no contest.
for gaming, Win32.

As for Vista - what ... a ... waste (of money, and system resources)

Why isnt FreeBSD or Any of the BSDs in that poll? IMO linux is utter chaos that somehow manages to work, it definately isnt an operating system since linux itself is just a kernel and GNU apps wrapped around it.....I use BSDs with no problems on my desktops and servers.

I imagine the *BSD lines of Unix are implicitly included in the "Branches of Linux" option - from value value they seem similair, but IMO both are geared towards different environments (to me, *BSD seems more suited to a server environment, and "Linux" - aka: Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc - seems to be more suited towards desktop/workstation environments depending on distribution and options. I could be wrong, however)

You are wrong. How can you include *BSDs in "branches of linux" when BSD was started about 2 decades before the first linux kernel was created? BSD to the uninformed user may look and function similiar to linux on the cli, but they are VERY different. Also, FreeBSD (my desktop of choice) does anything and everything that my wifes debian etch machine does. All three major BSDs can run linux binaries, linux cant run freebsd binaries iirc. I would say that FreeBSD is much more versatile than linux due to its superior package management, its true BASE install (no linux distro has a true base because in reality everything in all linux distributions (other than the kernal) are just GNU apps maintained by someone other than the distros dev team). Debian makes a half decent attempt at having a true base, but its still not up to par imo. And there wouldnt be any need for any BSD to have the ability to run linux binaries if todays imature coders werent so intent on creating apps that are dependant soley on linux. The average BSD user is ten years older than the average linux user. The BSD developers are more often older and more experienced than any linux distro team. Ill end this rant with a popular saying: BSD is designed, linux was grown like a fungus.

You are indeed right, katsklaw, my post up above - if i mislead anyone, I apologise - was me offering a thought on why the poll options are as they are.

PS: Windows Longhorn = Windows Vista

i don't even understand why there's a poll here - isn't this a thread about linking?

Because some people think it's "clever" to use a poll to make their thread stand out.
