First and foremost... a niggle: under Konqueror (KDE3, FreeBSD6.1), SearchIRC more often than not renders like it was just fed through a blender and the results heretofore spat on the screen (I don't know wether to blame the browser or the HTML in this case), but does the underlying HTML markup of SearchIRC conform to any W3C standard?
now... my suggestion: That SearchIRC move from phpBB in favor of Simple Machines Forum - for many reasons:- A lot of the modifications to phpBB (such as the neutering of the Network Announcements forum) is core to SMF by design
- Permissions are easier to manage (such as drilling them down to certain tasks for certain groups of people) - an example being allowing topic posters in the NA forum to reply to their own threads (it saves seeing 20x <insert network of choice name here> topics one after the other on the same page)
- I'm not a massive fan of phpBB after having tested it both on my own personal website, and on my local testing freebsd machine and comparing it against SMF head-to-head
- The templating system is a lot easier to deal with (I recall one phpBB version, think it was 2.0.21, that complained endlessly because I had removed the memberlist link from the layout template)
Just some thoughts |

| Im not sure about the template system but you can as far as I know achieve all that with phpBB3 now anyway. |

| Jason tells me there are technical reasons why we cannot change from phpbb without a significant amount of work for the staff - which we simply do not have time to do. |

Well at least one of the reasons is a technical reason relating to the SearchIRC control panels (which use phpBB's user database)
The password checking for that would need to be updated for a start. Although thats relativly small a problem and easy to solve.
Im not sure what other problems would arrise too though.
As for the phpBB3 option, as far as I know that uses the same password hashing as phpBB2. |

I had to install KDE to run Konqueror...
Here's a screenshot:

Besides the nav bar on the top right, it renders extremely well. It renders in all versions of MSIE I've tried, and all Firefox. It even renders nicely on my sidekick and iphone.
As far as phpbb goes, I use it's database for the back end for logging in the admin panel, ircimages, and other things. I'm not willing to change phpbb forum to a different forum unless there's going to be substantial benefits. As far as going to phpBB3, I am not in a rush to make changes if what's here works. Once it's been out for a while and the kinks are worked out, I'd consider it. |

| yes, I get that rendering most of the time, but there's the odd time when it'll look totally fubar (every element crammed into the same windowspace) and only a refresh can sort that out |

| I would assume it's a browser bug then, unless someone else with a different browser sees this. |
