Hello. I have a user I need banned from my network, problem is, he keeps resetting his dsl ip, by redialing in. Is there anything I might be able to do? I don't want to ban the ISP (Verizon) because that'll take out all my users. Any and all input it welcome. I use Inspircd with Atheme services. Thanks!

not much you can do other than keep banning his ident or complain to his ISP.

Ident is nothing like what it was designed for in todays IRC world. Today it takes 10 seconds to change and re-connect.

So you can ban his ISP, complain to his ISP and hope his account is canceled or keep putting up with him and banning his ident.

Thanks for the input. I think I've got him to stay off for now, after sending a local to chat with him. We've also gone ahead and emailed his isp. Thanks again!

Thats pretty harsh, filing a abuse report against him to his ISP. But hey, thats just my opinion... Wink

It's not harsh at all, since he is after all abusing his ISP's services to evade the ban.

forbid his nick? it will prevent him from coming for a sertain amount of time

no, it just makes him/her harder to find because he can't use that nick anymore.

forbiding a nick doesn't stop a user from connecting, it just stops them from using that single nick.

in a time not too far ago, one particular network was forced to ban entire ISP subnets because of one particular user. If memory serves me, the network did try to contact the ISP's abuse department all to no avail, so they banned the ISP and let the ISP deal with users complaining because of the situation - harsh, but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind

When I opered on DALnet, I akilled AOL on more than 1 occasion.

True. But do these abuse departments, actually do anything about it? I've been led to believe, that they don't - they're ignored, in most cases.

that is, until the users of that ISP who coincidentally also regularise on the network start beating a path to the abuse department - then the ISP pays attention (if only because said users likely threatened to take their business elsewhere - gotta love voting with your wallet Wink)
