I am about to purchase a dedicated server, but I need some kind of idea how much bandwidth it will take for around 600 users, lets just say---

- 600 users per day. (Very talkative users, almost every channel I have had on my last server talked continuously night on end)
- I plan on running, a couple eggdrops (Including: trivia bot, channel bot, proxy scan bot)
- Anope services, unrealIRCd and denora stats

As I said, this will be everyday, I plan on having quite a few active users on this server, I am looking to buy a server with around 2000GB bandwidth on a 100mbit connection...

If possible, I would like a couple suggestions on where I should buy this dedicated server at...

This question can not be answered with any form of accuracy. It really depends on far too many variables to name. Position on the network, number of users on the same server in the same channel, what the users are doing, how many are chatting, how frequently each user sends text, how frequently each user receives text, the number of people sending large amounts of text that are still small enough to go un-noticed .. etc ..

However some of the largest networks only use 300kbps sustained with 30+k users under normal conditions.

I would suggest Staminus, AwkNet or GigeServers if you want something US based.

Yes, AwkNet had some issues due to having to wait for the provisioning of new bandwidth and setup of the new Data Center.

After the changes the service has been rock solid.

Staminus and GigeServers are great and I would now rate AwkNet up there with them.

All comes down to how much money you want to put into it though.

Note: During the time there were issues they were more than happy to offer reimbursement for the hassles experienced. decent customer service at least Smile

You don't need 100 mbit...Its pointless entirely

Go for 10 mbit unmetered.

For me awknet is the best.
Staminus - FAST but not good.
gigeservers - The best ddos protection BUT LAGGGG
sharktech - No lag,same staminus.
awknet - good ddos protection and good network and no lagged.
I have one company and i use gigeservers and awknet,i prefer awknet Very Happy
Cool

Not accurate at all. It greatly depends on your needs. A person that uses very little sustained bandwidth can benefit more from the 100mbit LAN speeds for short bursts, ie downloading files which will be faster than a dedicated 10mbit pipe and it's almost always less expensive.

i.e. I get 100mbit for free vs the $350/mo for a dedicated 10mbit unmetered pipe. Since I don't use alot of bandwidth, I stay well within my monthly quota and it's $350/mo cheaper as well as 10 times faster when I do use it. So it would make no sense at all for me to have 10mbit unmetered.

you're talking about having 2000gb/month bandwidth?

Very Happy

i'm running a server now, i have at least 100+ concurrent users at any time of the day, i also run a hub for the network on my server, and at the most I would say I use 10GB.

IRC Is a text based protocol and chat interface, you must be really uninformed if you think you'll use 2000gb bandwidth on 600 users.

ps. most of the ircd servers tend to be older computers, and they're quite slow. Big hosting companies advertise Pentium 4 servers with gigabytes of ram, but if you look on Dalnet or IRCnet, EUnet, most of these networks are run on old machines.

My server for 1rc-chat network (mountainchalet.myftp.org), which runs file sharing+ftpd+httpd+other processes is only a 500Mhz, 128MB ram, 10GB hard drive Dell server, running Linux, of course.

I dont know whos pushing you to boy a huge plan, but it's bs.

Very true, I've said this for years.

Users ALL servers: 138 Max: 139

I have 130+ users, This is from my main hub. 4 day uptime, yes that's ~8MB in 4 days. That's about 60MB per month.

bytes sent 8055.144K 2816.224K
bytes recv 1546.922K 2094.699K
time connected 2349422 956927
incoming rate 0.00 kb/s - outgoing rate 0.00 kb/s
