the same way you get traffic to a web site - offer something unique that will keep people coming back. what reason is there to make someone choose your irc server over one of the thousands of others out there?

have a good staff, helpful, but keep your staff small, you dont want like 34 for irc opers and only have 4 real users. that kind of scares people away, thinking its a power hungry server.

From the start I'll have to agree. However, a few popular ways to get users involves offering IRCop status to others in exchange for their help in growing the network. Then there is merging where you have 2 or more networks that have done the former already and merge and have twice the staff they really need.

There is a fix for this in some IRCds. That is umode +H (oper status hiding). This hides the fact that the person is an IRCop from users.

Lets look at a few things that can help you look less "powerhungry" I'd like to appologize to all you unreal bashers and haters as it's my example ircd. Nothing against you or other ircds, but the facts state unreal is the more popular so my suggestions will help the most people. Please don't turn this into yet another Unreal bashing thread, it's been done 2348957239047859 times aready and you likely have nothing new to say, so please lets just refrain.

1> use SWHOIS to identify Network Staff and not vHosts. When using umode +H a vHost will still show the opers status and to be honest, most users don't really care if you are NetAdmin.on.your.network anyway, they are more interested in the "Nick is an IRCop". It's nothing more than inflexable vanity to start with. SWHOIS is hidden while using +H and exposed for all to see when you are not +H

2> if you desire a manditory staff channel(s) then keep them hidden from users with chanmode +s. Using chanmode +O or +A will help users out.

3> Actively use umode +H, this will hide the opers status in a /whois reply. It hides all aspects of the /whois that's IRCop related. IF you require your opers to actively "work" in your oper help channel *then* set umode -H! Then back to +H when they are not.

4> Insist and actively advice users to use the /helpop system, this 1. can help answer questions as well as make them more self sufficient. 2 reduces the traffic in your help channel. Opers can even use the /helpop command to communicate with all the other helpops on the network.

5> Now that your network has grown a little, stop handing out O:Lines! That's easier said than done I know, but it's a step needed to "normalize" your user count.

More on topic. greg27 is correct. There are 4000+ vanilla Unreal/Anope IRC neworks out there and nearly all of them run the exact same configuration (the default one). They all seem to think their networks is "better". Sadly, better is an objective opinion in this case. Of course they think their network is better ... they own it!

Find something that no one or hardly no one else is doing and focus on doing that. The hard part is there is only so much that can be done on IRC and many others are usually already doing it. To be truely unique you need to have some coding skills in a language like C or C++ since most IRCd's and services packages are written in these languages. Then make your software unique. You don't need to go too far overboard though because most IRC users are not technically interested in IRC, so most users can't tell the difference between ircu, bahamut, Unreal or any other ircd and most really don't care. Even non-technical users will see a difference in services though if they are radically different. But beware! Users that are not brand new to IRC have already grown used to their previous set of services so don't completey change or make harder them to learn (harder in this case is from the non-technical users point of view, not a technical users point of view).

If you'd like you can stop by irc://irc.collectiveirc.net/ircmojo and find me in #ircmojo and if I'm around I'll help you find something that can help you be unique. I don't post here with my normal IRC nick, this is for personal reasons, but anyway .. just say you are looking for ircmojo in that channel and I'll notice or someone who knows me (usually an op) will tell me about you. I usually idle there 24/7 so I'll notice it anyway unless it's the odd chance I do actually disconnect Smile

with regards to usermode +H... I once opered on a network where I didn't use that usermode... the second I opered, I'd be placed in #staff and #help (as per server config)... And once I got into #help, I'd be bombarded with request after request: "Can you help me do X?" or "Why can't I do Y?" not to mention people whoising the crap out of me every five seconds to see if I was still active and PM'n me asking why I'm not helping them... Since then, I religiously use +H on every network I oper for. You'll only know if I'm an oper there if 1) I tell you, or 2) You see me do something that only an oper can do
