For users only, without admin stuff and so on. Just as easy as possible for irc beginners. Enter network, enter channel, enter name, connect, done.
Or a download from my website preconfigured with all but nick. |

When suggesting clients to beginners, I usually recommend IceChat. It has some complicated features, but they don't get in the way of the core stuff.
mIRC is pretty good for technically competent beginners, but it isn't as intuitive as IceChat. |

| I use mirc and have no problems. But that`s because I can read and understand English. Multi language is important for beginners. |

I beg to differ. Popularity has little to do with ease of use or Microsoft Windows would be the easiest OS to use, patch, debug, upgrade, install, customize or any other term you can think of.
Personally I think popularity is based on timing, over all stability, marketing and a bit of luck.
At any rate, mIRC is intentionaly designed with a simple interface it has the old "90's look and feel". mIRC even pops up the first thing you need to do to get started right in front of your face. Nick, email, name and then server and your done. If you happen to miss the server part and go right to the connect button, it doesn't complain, it just sends you to a server. I've seen 10 year olds that have no prior IRC experience configure mIRC in just a few minutes. Can't get any more simple than that.

totally irrelevant, it's a server none the less. the point is .. you are on IRC within a few short minutes. Can it be improved upon? sure, not related to this thread though. |

| yeah, but I'll disconnect from a server sometimes to sort out my ident and realname, and when I hit OK, mIRC conveniently forgets that I was on one server, and auto sets up to connect me to one of the aforementioned when I /s (I have an alias for /server, with a few extra "features") |

Personally, I'm not a big fan of mIRC. The interface is not just dated, it's ugly. I also don't like Windows-only clients, which is why I have switched to KVIrc as my primary client. KVIrc, while a little less intuitive for initial set-up, does have some nice features that focus on making IRC more "competitive" with modern IM clients and other chat systems. I also like the multi-platform builds.
As for mIRC, there are many other things I do not like about it, but I will keep those opinions to myself. All of that said, I do hope that future versions of mIRC continue to change the look and feel of the client. 6.3 was the first revision in a long time that made me give mIRC another serious look. I would love to see more IRC clients try to push for taking back some of the limelight from AIM, MSN, XFire, etc. 6.3's interface enhancements (multi-window view and balloons) helped in this area, but the default interface is still lacking the polish to catch the eyes of many would-be IRC-ers.
Now to get back to the real reason for this thread (which I have so heartlessly raised from the dead), X-Chat is another great client for beginners. The interface is fairly simple, with a mostly painless configuration process. I don't think any client has really nailed down the "beginner" category very well, but some come close, like X-Chat. |

I'm inclined to agree - to a point - with everything ButtaKnife just said. I'll admit I like mIRC (if only because it does what I need it to, and I find it easy to expand it's functionality if only thru scripts - and a few useful API calls via DLLs), but I'll also concede the interface is getting somewhat long in the tooth (granted, it is tried and true).

I'll agree - and it isn't as refined as some others out there (I gave it a blast roughly a month or 2 ago under Windows XP Pro SP2, and could pretty much make it crash and burn just by adding an address book entry to it). | Quote: | | X-Chat is another great client for beginners. X-Chat is a good client, I'll admit, and I do use it on my linux and unix workstations, but when I'm on my laptop, I prefer mIRC - if only due to I'm used to it too much  |

xchat is not that bad i agree
in fact mirc needs smileys and stuff.. and maybe voice option.
look at bytecam.net with that addon we get close a bit to palktalk |

my MIRC has smileys and stuff <3 and the sad thing is, all that stuff is like 5 years old, all the msn kids have them in there scripts already. |
