ANOPE is EPONA spelled backwords. | Because anope built on epona's codebase after epona was abondoned (as stated on the anope about page). |

Epona has recently been "un-abandoned" so to speak.
See http://www.epona.org |

epona uses their old code base and is much more lib based in their layout now. Much of the old core that anope is based on is pushed out to these lib based items
anope still use alot of code from the epona / ircservices core that its built off,
granted there have been advances in the code but much of it dates back to the split from ircservices to epona.. |

| Well one of the major new features Epona has added in its recent release is full live MySQL DB support which as of yet (expected in the next development cycle) Anope does not support. |

Very interesting, I would love to see a big network using it with Live MySQL, do you know any? |

A Services package that fits your needs
Personally, I prefer Atheme. Just recently adapted it for use on a network I'm with - easy to write modules for. Although, for a services package that claims it's all about "choice," I don't see why they didn't leave SQL support intact. The XMLRPC interface is nice, but most developers would opt to use an SQL db to provide limited web functionality (even if it isn't real-time).
hmmm...the site seems to be down as well (at least on my end) |

The website has had some problems (server died IIRC), and hasn't yet been replaced.
Source control works fine (hg.atheme.org) and packages are still available from jilles' homepage (http://www.stack.nl/~jilles/irc/#atheme).
SQL backends were removed as (in some cases) they had bugs or were out of date, and nobody (or nearly nobody) used them, meaning they pretty much ended up like an appendix.
Backends are still modular, so there is nothing to stop you writing one if you want one |

Thanks for the update, and link!
That's one of main reasons I like Atheme - it's so easy to customize towards one's own needs. I probably will end up writing an SQL backend for it, since for our purposes it would be useful. |
