agreed. I've seen networks that accept donations online have disclaimers similar to that.

I've seen really poorly management towards users that donate to a network then break the rules if not ALL rules and the user does not get punished, donate or not a network must treat everyone the same according to their rules.

Donations are not a way to buy exceptions. They are a way to keep a network running.

if anything, a donation should be mutually seen as a tangible appreciation for the time and effort the server admin[s] put into running a network

I think it's acceptable for a network to accept donations.. Like the previous posters have said, if someone is in a position to donate some $ toward the running costs of a network, good on them for doing so!

We've been accepting donations for quite some time now, and to date, have only ever received one donation, for $10.

Needless to say.. Unless you are a very large network, the odds are that you will not get a lot of coin, even if you are a very 'good', 'respectable' network..

personally I think you have better luck getting donations from users than finding a good network run by staff that have actually been through all the steps to becoming an admin instead of how most admins appear today.

You are supposed to progress through the "ranks" as it should be. user, ircop, server/services admin, then after owning your own server for 3-5 years on a good sized net of say, 10k+ users THEN try running your own network. Unfortunately it's more like, download an IRC client for the first time at 8am, find that ircd's are free (usually) by 11am, running your own network by 9pm.

Personally I'll donate money to an experienced network and I think that all these newbie admins with less than 5 years of IRCop experience, I mean on a network with thousands of users, not some net that houses < 200 users are far more threatening to the IRC community than the occasional net asking for financial assisance.

Any idiot can chat with their friends while opered for a few years on a 50 user net, but it takes a REAL IRCop to do the same thing on a net with several thousands of users for 3-5 years. If you have never done the later, then you won't know exactly what I mean by it.

Donations are never wasted, sometimes I get donations, though you know what is a pain when the donations are made from hacked Paypal accounts, and months later the owner finds out and reclaims the money, one reason why to not setup Paypal donations, they give you more headaches then anything else.

Also the reason why I really do not like Paypal, you're never sure that they money you get is yours for the keeping.

I don't get it, donations are never required yet people feel they need to use hacked accounts to send money, go figure !?
