I have no desire to run an IRC server but I do want to program my own IRC client in order to get familar with a real programming language (java in this case).

Since I don't know the language well there are likely to be quite a few errors and it seems a bad idea to do the initial testing on a public IRC server (in case an infinite loop gets interpreted as a DoS attack and gets me banned) so I'd like to set up a local (windows) server that I can connect to and use to get rid of the more obvious of the bugs.

I searched around and found a couple of free ones but after downloading and installing/extracting them the setup was a bit involved, one set of docs said I should spend several hours on creating a configuration file.

So I'm wondering if anyone can point me towards a free windows IRC server that is either plug and play or has minimal setup (change the admin password, run)

Also, if I only allow local connections there should presumably be few security concerns?

UnrealIRCd has a native windows port that you are free to download and use.

The configuration file will be bewildering to start with, if you're not used to it, but it's fairly self documented (and if you have any trouble, there's the official documentation (which is also distributed with the installation) that should help you get some concerns ironed out).

Install is ~10mins (depending on what options you choose)
Configuration 5-15 minutes (depending on experience)

If you start having trouble with a certain thing, feel free to PM me (I'm not an official supporter or member of the Unreal team, but I am willing to help you personally) with your questions.

Unreal is possibly the best IRCd to do internal testing with. I've used it for months and will never use another. It uses little to no resources, even when I flood myself Smile

Try Anope as the services; it also has a windows port that has self-documentation and other documentation. Very useful to get familiar with services Smile

define "best" in terms of comparison. Unreal has a featureset and configuration many enjoy, but there are shortcomings in it that others may not. InspIRCd is the same, featureset and configurability that many enjoy, and shortcomings that others may not. It's all about what's going to suit one's needs better.

Thats what it really comes down to - personal preference. And that also applies to services packages.
