Such a true statement. The sad part is, most people really don't put quite enough effort into their network and take the time to properly configure things, train staff members, and set up a good solid form of management and set guidelines for the network. Everyone is in too big of a hurry to set it up and go. That's really quite sad, as networks such as these usually end up dieing, proving to have been a waste of time, money, and effort. Maybe people will take a cue from this. I've always gone with the mindset that if I'm going to do something, I"m going to do it correctly and to the very best of my ability. |

You see no evil
I have a feeling with all the botnets and such IRC in the future will never be the same. In addition, popular games and applications like IMs and TeamSpeak pose a great threat to IRC. However, IRC is a great place to meet new people and make friends online, all within a course of a few days |

| No, it won't ever be the same. You are right, it can still be a great place to talk to old friends and make new ones though. I think irc can hold it's own against all those other programs, but who knows. I am by no measure or right a god or better than anyone else. I'm just a user like everyone else. The same ideaology holds true when it comes to me and a network I hold a staff/ircop position on. People who think they are god or know more than anyone else, usually don't, from my experiences. Far as irc itself goes, guess we'll find out what the future holds. |

| Meh, I go back to when MPlayer was around. That was quite a massive voice/entertainment/gaming program. I have yet to see anything comparable to it. |

There maybe some who what to be the size of a dalnet, efnet or bondage however there are thousands of smaller networks who dont want to be that size. Most of us are run on small equipment and could not afford to invest in the kind of infrastructure that the large networks take. Personally i would be happy if my network got to about 200 active chatters but right now the 50 or so I have are good people and have been with my network through some of the rough times.
The future of IRC may well not be with the large networks but with smaller niche oriented networks. |

| I agree. There's been alot of movement away from the larger networks for various reasons such as instability of servers, banning of filesharing (music specifically I think), and everyone's desire just to have their own small niche, taking others with them away from the large networks. I know larger network instability played a large part in my decision to start a network again. Although, you can't necessarily blame those large networks, as popularity does have it's price when it comes to irc and networks. Smaller networks have the benefit of usually having a smaller and non-malicious crowd, hence their better stability. I'm not sure I see the top 3-5 networks getting any bigger unless they do something drastic to attract users. |

actually I think it would be an adminstrative nightmare, not to mention how do you link server packages that were never designed to be linked. The warez crew dont like to be with any but themselves and nor do i want them on my servers. The Christians wont want to be linked to any thing that they see as against the bible. We'd have all the problms that the world does.
IMHO

NW | Strike one vote in favor of what this fellow IRC'er said... I agree wholeheartedly, it would be an administrative nightmare, not to mention the collosal headaches involved in bringing multiple varying groups together (oh yeah, so seeing Christians and Atheists managing a network side by side... well, not really) |

I don't happen to agree with you on the future of IRC, I think its future is good but the big networks may not be that future. IRC has the capacity to be a kind of all things to all people, just like the Inter net.
My feeling is that, over time, there maybe a move away from the bigger networks to smaller niche networks; ones that are single topic oriented or specialize in a few topics. For example the Crhistian, warez and D/s lifetyle servers.
Personally i find trying to carry on a converstation, with 60 people in a room, an exercise in futility as the room scrolls so fast that you miss answers or questions. Most of the new networks are never going to be the size of a DalNet, EfNet or Bondage.com and many of us may not want to be that big.
As with many thing on the Internet we shall just have to wait n see how this all plays out.
