I just noticed this new feature this morning. It looks like a cool idea, but how does it work? Is it randomized, editor's choice, done by votes?

Isn't it cool? :)

Networks are chosen by random from our list of open, active networks that have had information supplied by their representative. That network will be featured on our front page. Then another will be selected and featured. We're not sure how long to set the timer before it cycles - 1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day? We're kind of experimenting with that right now to see what the reaction is, and adjust as necessary.

I'll let Jason fill you in on the details.

Pretty much what Mary said.

We randomly select a network that has network information being supplied. The blurb must contain more than 100 characters of text, must be active, must have 10 or more channels and some other bare minimum requirements.

I still disagree Sad. It turns everything more into the competition it is. Taking you have minimum requirements, and basically shun smaller networks. I still find this something else that takes away the joy of running an irc network.

10 channels isn't exactly a huge requirement, nor is requiring them to have some text about the network if they want to be eligible for being featured.

It isn't about competition - it's about network promotion. You can't "win" or get "votes" to become featured. It's automated. So there is zero competition.

I agree, there is no competition. This basically just shows random networks that have an active owner that submitted information. 10 channels is nothing.

10 channels is good. we should give the chance to small ones to be seen. 10 good channels worth 200 channels of a warez network.

I'll go quality not quantity.

10 was a number picked out of a hat.

The only goal was to make sure we're recommending networks that actually have channels to visit. An empty network with 2 channels should not be featured.

I've updated the featured network thread with actual info about the process and requirements.

What if you got like 3 chat channels, all with 50 active chatters each? Thats not a dead network, nor dead channels.
