More and more people don't know how to use IRC, don't want to know or simply think programs like MSN are "better" because they look "nice".
If you're the kind of person who thinks "ancient" is a Playstation 1, then you probably have no idea how to start up a DOS program or use IRC. But for all others: I prefer IRC above all other "new, graphicly superior, user friendly" chat programs. Do you agree or do you think programs like MSN are the future and IRC is just for old people in rocking chairs? |

I'm not gonna vote in this poll you forgot a category. I use all of the different options. Each has something that I like, I don't use ICQ as much as the others, but I still use it to an extent.

Yeah I was thinking of a "I use all of them" option but couldn't be bothered. Besides, the vote isn't for what you use, it's for what you like the most / prefer to use. I use MSN too sometimes but I still think IRC is better.

I would say IRC is my favorite chat client since the others seem to lag my computer a lot or they lag naturally, and there's a lot more control over channels in IRC. The only thing IRC is missing that the others do have is voice chat and cam chat, which if there was a way to set that up, IRC would knock the rest out of the competition. Not sure if there is a way that could ever be developed truly. If it could or is in developments, that would be terrific and IRC would be able to keep up with the other mainstream chats. I don't really mind IRC being sort of underground compared to the other chat options though because it keeps most of the people who I can't read their typing any way off IRC. Some of the best chatters seem to find IRC and many IRC users tend to dismiss silly things like a/s/l and aohell talk. We have it, but not nearly as bad.

Since it's been proven possible to add graphic gaming (such as the Dragonball Z game) to IRC, I see no reason why it wouldn't be possible to include voice-over-IP or video-over-IP on IRC using some kind of IRC-based chat program (Dragonball Z is a mIRC-script add-on, so this could be done the same?)

What's the point of adding VOIP capabilities to IRC? Why not use technology that's more suited to it, otherwise you'll just end up adding something like DCC which isn't really part of IRC at all.

Maybe the plethora of VOIP applications/networks that already exist. Any attempt to add it to IRC is going to be a massive kludge.

hi again bobjuh
Maybe adding VOIP to IRC will suck donkeyballs, but if you don't like it, just don't use it. I don't think many networks would want to anyways due to the massive increase in bandwith it would consume. |

Not just that, but you then add the latency of the IRC network. To counter that you'd end up directing packets directly at your peers, which is why I originally made the DCC comparison.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Those IM apps are meant for a private conversation situation. IRC is meant for a group chatting.
