It forces them into a chan so that all the spambots are in one place, and can't do anything. Sure, they can just reconnect but they'll end up straight back there as soon as they spam again. It's quite a clever system.

I was just wondering why they need to be forced into a channel to stop them from doing anything. I assume that you would generally specify a local channel, otherwise you just have the problem of massive bursts again I'd have thought.

The bots generally join random large channels, and spam all the users in that channel. So forcing them into a channel that they can't part, and can't talk to anyone except IRCops in that channel, stops them from doing anything, and they don't usually reconnect until their connection is dropped so it's quite an effective method to prevent spam.

Yeah, I know what these spambots usually do. I was just questioning why it was decided to force them into a channel rather than simply stopping them from doing anything without forcing them into it. Just curious about the reasoning behind that decision.

Just easier, and also gives you a view of how many spambots you have on the network. Btw I live in Birmingham too. (Well, Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham)

Birmingham, or perhaps the West Midlands conurbation in general, seems to be an IRC hotspot. The cluster I opered on had several members from both Birmingham and Coventry, and several of the regulars in channels I frequent are also from the area. As to why we all seem to flock towards this place I don't know.... :)

Yeh, one of our opers is from Coventry, and one lives about 2 miles from my house aha. Funny how you meet people who live so close on IRC.

You can protect yourself from attacks if you want to spend the coin, or have the skills. And as for traffic, focus on Quality over Quantity.

Well there is a brand new IRC protocol currently being designed. The design for it came from a april fools prank from mIRC which we loved so much were actually releasing a rfc for it which is due for a release in a few years, btw anyone who has knowledge in VoIP and knows about the IRC protocol join irc.flameirc.net and find me and join the new era of IRC when it gets released.
