|
|
I'm looking for an IRCD that would do well for a small network. I've looked at Unreal, but it seems like everyone and their brother is using Unreal, and I've looked at something like IRCu. The two IRCDs seem to be complete opposites, with Unreal having every feature ever imaginable and being IRC at it's basics.
I was wondering if there were any IRCDs that fell into the middle of this spectrum?
Thanks! |

The question you should be asking is What features do you want in the ircd
One comparsion chart at
http://www.inspircd.org/wiki/Comparison_Of_Features
Kinda spells out what each ircd does different from each other.. its really up to you to find the one that does what you want |

I actually used bahamut for quite awhile, but bahamut doesn't seem to be in active development now. I liked the level of features in bahamut, but finding a compareable IRCD still in active development would be nice |

| NeoStats doesn't officially support PlexusIRCd currently, there is tentative support for it in NeoStats 3 a3-dev but it hasn't been released yet |

I strongly recommend bahamut
They are still on development, but a little slow.
You could also try the ViagraIRCD: http://www.viagraircd.com/index.php
which is based by bahamut. |

I will agree Bahamut is rock solid.
But it has absolutely no extras what so ever and the coders are very rude about adding in new things. They will not add in new things unless the administrators on dalnet want it. Now im not saying you need all the extra crap like unreal but bahamut is strictly plain jane and i don't like the coders at all.
I recommend UltimateIRCd. |

Bahamut coders may seem rude because Bahamut is specificlly written for DALnet and offered to honor the GPL license it's under not for popularity like most other IRCds which will tend to be more generic to please the masses. Not having "extras" allows it hold tens of thousands of users per server and it's been proven to do so in a production environment. At one time DALnet had well over 100k users on Bahamut and didn't need any "toys" to keep their network secure.
Bahamut and Anope combined can easily create a highly stable chat environment, unless your one of the kids that think that "toys" and unrestricted access are required.
Bahamut is used by a top 10 net (DALnet)
Slightly modified Anope Services is used on a top 10 network (Rizon)
Seems logical to use what "the big guys" have deemed solid. If Bahamut production has slowed or stopped, it's probably because they don't see anything else that needs to be fixed or added at this time. |

There's also charybdis-ircd... http://www.nenolod.net/code/charybdis/.
It's an atheme.org project, though -- so it's designed to be integrated with Atheme services.
Featureset-wise, it's more on the IRCu side of things, but contains quite a few features oriented towards channel administration, i.e. join throttle, quiet masks, conference/event-oriented features (i.e. channel mode +z; relaxed moderation -- all messages affected by +m are sent to channel staff), services protection, aliases, and custom vhosts.
There's some beta-level written documentation available at http://viewsvn.atheme.org/~nenolod/charybdis-oper-guide . |
