Hello Smile after following these boards for a long time i thought why not an irc channel where all of us netadmins and ircops can gather round and debate and offer our services such as linkings etc. the real time contact could be pretty good i thought of omegairc cuz i always hang out there and the place is pretty paceful and stable if anyone wants to take a look
it'd be cool if we all go to #UnitedAdmins on irc.omegairc.org
tell me what you guys think Smile

sounds like a winner Very Happy

it'd be a great idea where peeps can negotiate links/mergers in neutral territory with little to no collateral damage...

it would probably be wiser to stick it on a server that has been established for a few years and is about 100-1000 users in size, that way smaller network admins can go there on sort of netural terms and discuss things. placing on a network like yourselfs (no offence) will probably cause more harm than good especially if talks break down and things get nasty.

Wise point of view. However, Omega IRC Isn't interested in using such room for its own benefit. Like I said before. It is the place where I hang out most of the time and I really don't go much to other IRC Networks.
I started this because it's not a bad idea at all. About the room control Since i found the room I thought of finding neutral ops as well because Omega IRC and #UnitedAdmins have not much to do.
Like he said in the post. everything is beautiful until things get nasty. Yep
and the network pays the consequences Sad
hence the main purpose of UnitedAdmins. I don't remember in what post I read something like 'the netadmin job never ends' wise words.
this can sound mildly out of topic but. we're all on the same boat wether we like it or not. I personally don't have any differences with other netadmins but I know some do, and I think it's time to quit that and work all together to give IRC a good future instead. Who knows. That's basically what I thought when I decided to create #UnitedAdmins later on if things get nasty like he said we all can choose another place.. or not? everything can happen in the IRC world but the purpose of this room is actually to stop the bs a bit and work all together to inprove our services and networks Smile

Collaboration has been attempted by many other groups and individuals trying to accomplish this very same goal. Thus far all have failed miserably.

To use your "all in the same boat" analogy. I disagree. We are not in the same boat but in seperate boats on the same body of water. Some are trying to row in the same direction, some make fun of others because of any and every stupid, irrelevant reason. Others barely know how to row their boat. Others are simply in their own boat to be "cool". Yet even others think it smart to have more than 1 person in charge and person1 is rowing East and person2 is rowing West.

I admire your attempt, however so long as the requirements of owning an IRC server/network remain as easy as they are. IRC will never be united. Simply because you will never have the bulk of the IRC administrations attention.

IMHO, IRC servers should be very hard to install and setup for IRC newbies with no tech support. It's very possible to design it so someone that knows enough about *nix commands and IRC can install and configure a new IRCd and filter out the newbies at the same time. this will not happen simply because of all the different IRCd's available today. Everyone wants "easy to install" as a feature and IRCd/services coders are all too willing to provide it so they too can capture 15 minutes of fame by claiming to be "popular". Even if by some divine intervention every ircd/services package got to where experienced admins can install without tech support and newbies couldn't, someone .. somewhere will get the bright idea to make an "easy to install" ircd and the cycle starts all over.

The IRC protocol it's self isn't even unified. There are atleast 2 distinct concepts of what IRC should be like. Both generally follow RFC 1459. However, at least 1 "concept" doesn't follow RFC2810,2811,2812 protocols. The original IRC concept follows all 4 RFC's. However, only about 20% of the total IRC users are on a network that follows them. The other 80% of total IRC users are on other "concepts" that loosely follow the 28xx RFC's whereas others could careless of their existance.

So as you can see, IRC it's self isn't even structured to collaborate, let alone seperate IRC networks. I like to think myself an optimistic person and believe all things are possible, but I am also smart enough to know that a bucket full of holes will hold little water.

Good luck with your project though.

yup i guess you're right Smile oh well at least if some admins wanna contact me to talk about our networks and how to inprove em etc they know where to find me Razz
*shakes head*

I hope someday everyone running an irc network in any charge realizes of how serious this hobby is. Because differing from many others you're here responsible for alot of people.. neddless to say ircops/ops/admins arent in charge of computers (although many of them see chatters as a number and putting a bot to idle is a valid goal as well :s)
they're in charge of people who is actually using computers to talk and they have feelings and carring stuff like all of us and we shouldn't play with things like that.

bonne nuit Smile
