My network is an avg of 2500 users and about 5000 spontaneous users.
Some people may find this weird, but 99% of the people on my network know each other. My network consists of teens and young adults who live towns from around the province. People in my area depend on IRC to find out about party\ pick up a chick\ or to even just get their homework. IRC in my area has replaced the phone. We use globals to announce parties, give the latest buzz, etc. I could name about 100+ people who have picked up on IRC, giving the fact they probably know each other from school or a school near by. Its pretty cool, you can just dance (*go*) on IRC around 6:00pm on a friday night and easly find something to do, whether its a rocker party or a few friends getting together and chilling out somewhere. I know i've come on just to tell my girlfriend im on my way over to pick her up.
Anyway, I find it kind of cool, share your opinions.
(never got to read it over because im at work, im sure there are spelling errors!) |

Thats not unusual at all-the best way to build a network is to have friends tell friends who tell friends, etc......
Its better than spamming definetely. I have 500 so far-all by word of mouth. Takes alot longer, but its better that way-less likely to attract attacks and bad stuff.
If more networks would go by word of mouth instead of spamming, they would last alot longer-most that spam get attacked off the face of the earth because they piss people off |

Right, exactly.
Its called redundancy 6 of the servers are mine, the rest are friends and other friends who were referred to me.
And do the math, 124+529 is 653
Also, keep in mind, out of those 24, 4 of them are services, statserv, a serviceslink server (doesn't allow outside connects) and a staff only server (only allows staff to connect).
So far my users are pleased with it-they know if a server goes down, the random will have them back on within 60 seconds
We've been running anywhere from 550-720 users lately, and its going up daily. The main reason I hear is the redundancy. I figured to found a network, I had to step up and create a nice base, so I did-6 servers of my own, on seperate providers I might add (does no good to have them all on one-if that provider dies so do all 6) plus services, etc. That base has helped us get to 24 servers and now we're starting to acquire some larger channels.
If you don't like it, thats fine, nobody is twistin your arm to use it |

I wish i had a network like that here. But irc is like very unknown to people in the netherlands. The higher up the age ladder the more known it gets. Only clan kids and vivid gamers know of irc. The rest uses msn messenger and other chat clients :S |

| Well my network is a little small but for me is not how many users I can get or how many servers we can get, whats important is that the users are active and that they have a good time, yeah the best way is to ask friends which will ask their friends to join, thats how it works but we should mostly focus about making the users happy, its easy to get 500 and more users but its hard to make them stay. |

altough on my network, there aren't that much users, but they all know eachother.

| never loved on irc. blondes say they are brunette and vice versa. nothing is true in what women say on irc. "almost" . they just give the best image of themselves. actually same for males (exeptions exist). now if u call love = sex, then i loved a lot. a lot a lot... and i bet many did. |

Did you forget that women take part in these forums?
What an utter load of crap. It's been my experience that people are the same on irc and irl, sure you hear stories, but like this they just perpetuate the negative image of IRC. |
