Well heres a little something
Ok so almost everyone wants to have their own network and everyday we see some new network and/or server rising. as well servers delinking and going by their own or linking to others, so here is what I got in mind, an affiliate program for IRC networks, like lets say "you put my network link on your site and ill put yours on mine" imo it would attract users for all networks and seem friendlier along with other nets, not sure if its been done before..... my staff and myself think its a good idea to do this, it would build less rivalry between one net and the other.

it's actually not a bad idea, it's better then having links, and users connecting from a wide variety of addresses to one place..

however, i could see it being difficult to implement. but Affialiations are generally the better way to go, its done on e-tail websites all over the place, however they charge for affialiations. It's proven to work.

The only way to go is link people you actually trust and learn tkl exceptions
Aswell as keeping IRCop's to a minimum, I only have about 2 - 5 active IRCops at one time.
Also as a main hub owner you must atleast know 50% more then your links and opers, This veloc guy has bots doing his job for him, That is no way to run a network, Me I know more then everyone I link to and give opers to since I've been around for 6 - 8 years.

i find that generally competent staff is the better thing, not to say '' i must know more than you ''
looking for links from people that you KNOW don't know anywhere near as much as you sounds..daft...

I think that cooperating networks might always help out but there is a risk to this approach; users may expect that the other network is "more of the same" and if they're happy where they are (its my opinion that everyone travels around on x amount of networks) it might not be interesting for 'm.

Personally I'd like to see a website which tried to chart the several networks out there and test them. For example; checking out if certain networks really are as helpfull as they claim to be, or if others really live up to the theme they're promoting, etc. It might shed a whole new light on the massive amounts of networks out there, especially if it would also become very clear that some networks are merely consisting of people playing oper while others are trying to take a serious effort. Naturally, I have no idea if something like that already exists, but I think the idea might be intruiging. There are so many opers out there who don't even know what an u:line is...

It's my opinion that instead of everyone and their brother starting a new network, they put aside their petty "I must be incharge" attitudes and actually look for like minded individuals and form a single network.

All too often around here you see "Hi, my staff is friendly, we run Unreal and anope, come see us" pleas for users. If people would actually take notice as to what others are posting they would find that a network just like the one they started this morning already exists. However, what actually happens is people don't go looking for like minded people and take the lazy way out and start yet another generic 2 user network that has 3 servers.

If all the new Unreal/Anope non-warez networks that started in the last 12 months grouped together, they'd have a sizable userbase. Instead, everyone must be incharge. No one looks at the good of the situation as a whole. People would rather stroke their own egos and have Net Admin and SRA in their title.

I'm not saying your idea is a bad one, I just think there are more sensible solutions.

So many networks are around, simply because people dont/cant get along. You read it all the time. "We have just gone through a bad link", and then they are back on their own again. People try to group up, but fail, for who knows what reasons. This is why we will have 100's if not 1000's of these tiny networks around, that all pretty much offer the same thing. Is it people ego's that get in the way, pride, power hungry? Probably, and more so. Or is it just still a thrill of running your own server, and have your 5-10 users connect to it?

You can see that a lot of people do want to co-operate, but time and time again, it fails. I dont really see a solution to this problem.

Sister networks is a concept I would LOVE to see implemented. While linking is one way to go about making large networks, eventualy they become unwieldy and difficult to protect. The concept of 2 or more networks working together and even referring users to each other for the various types of channels each may have may be a solution to some of the problems besetting the larger networks.

Keep smiling! =o)
