Its not about being an irc'er its about price, why pay more for exactly the same item?
I dont really care what gamers or whatever say about 'but intel/amd performs better in game X', i havent been able to prove this true, so i'm just sticking with what costs me less. |

That's because you are just listening to the mainstream media. Intel have working 64-bit machines since a few years ago. You may note have seen 64-bit x86 processors from Intel, because they are just for servers.
IA-64 isn't just a extension over an old architeture, as x86-64 is. It is a completly new architeture, with many other features (and some problems).
IA-64 for Linux: http://www.ia64-linux.org/
Gelato.org, Advancing Linux Itanium: http://www.gelato.org/
Intel Itanium 2 Processor Family - Technical Documents: http://developer.intel.com/design/itanium2/documentation.htm
Pentium 4 Xeon has 64 bit support too, but it's only for power machines yet:
Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology: http://www.intel.com/info/em64t/
And yes, I'm completly fond to Intel. Fond enough even to tattoo "Intel Inside" on my right arm. Could talk for hours why Intel is great, but don't have time right now :P

This site now operates on an AMD64 3500+ with x86_64 OS.
It used to run on a dual 2.4ghz xeon.
Meanwhile, at work we have a quad opteron server with 16 gigs of ram and 10 terrabytes of disk space. We spent about $26,000 for it. You would not belive how fast it is.
To give you an idea - the old server (dual 2.8ghz xeon) would take ~200,000 lines of php code, process it, and output it to the user in about 0.76 - 0.83 of a second. With PHP caching, we brought that down to ~0.4 seconds. That means the code is stored in ram and processed there, no disk seeking (shm_only). The new server WITHOUT any caching will do it faster than the old with caching - 0.3 of a second. With php caching it will process and output in 0.03 of a second.
openglx, we were just given a free Itanium rack mount server. It has 2 gigs of ram. The server has been named Pinto. Yes, they are that worthless.
Before you label me as an amd fanboi, remember SearchIRC has run on intel servers a lot longer than it has run on amd. Also virtually every system in my work's datacenter that isn't Sun, is on an intel system. |

Well I used Intel before but wasn't quite happy with it so I tried AMD and I am now having an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ which I am really happy with, the only thing that is bad about AMD CPU's is that they tend to be hot and you will need a good CPU cooler, but other then that I would stick with AMD..
Gotta love it! |

Gotta love it! :P | You think that intel cpus run cooler? The 64bit intel chip has a very long execution pipeline.
JFYI, the searchirc box usually runs around 86 degrees, it goes up to around 98 degrees fahrenheit at full load. I have the stock cpu fan that came with it. |

i'm looking at a new comp....its an AMD box.....the stock cpu is a sempron 2200+, i'll prob replace it with an athlonxp 3000/3200...whichever i can afford at the time...
the sempron may suck a bit...but it has to beat a PII 350... |

zeke, im using a sempron at the moment and its ok for games like unreal tournament 2004 (low quality), quake 3, farcry, command and conquer, robot wars, need for speed underground 2, etc.
so semperons are ok when coupled with a decent graphics card (mine's coupled with an old geforce 2 atm, but still runs well )
i admit i am a bit behind with hardware due to not having much money, but im happy with what i have at the moment
thats my two cents. |

Don't like those? I'm always accepting hardware donations
Good to know that AMD is doing something useful nowadays, but I'd wait a few months before saying that AMD is kicking Intel out of the market. |

In fact, we had to fight the higher ups in the company in order to go with something "nonstandard" as an AMD server. |

not to diss Intel or nuttin, but PC World tests have proven that AMD Athlons running at lower clock frequencies than Intel Pentium 4s have been better performing than the latter of those aforementioned processors.
Even my own (rather one-sided) real-world usage tests have put the AMD ahead (My personal comp is a Celeron 2.7GHZ, and the processor in my old man's is an Athlon 1800+, running at 1.5GHz). Memory is 256MB and 512MB respectively, but for things like logins, app start up, general usage, the AMD does come out on top -- even tho it does have more memory.
TO anullify any memory bias, i swapped the memory sticks over (so the AMD had half of what it used to, and the Celeron twice that) and the tests were the same -- both running Windows XP Pro SP2 |
