Addendum to my previous post. When I say "removing illegal content from IRC", I'm well aware of how DCC works. However, you must keep in mind that you're supplying users with a means to congregate for illegal activities, and by knowing so, you're enabling the crime.

As i said, i have taken advice.

There is a HUGE difference between actively moderating and acting when something illegal is brought to your attention.

When i decided to start an irc network i thought hard about my aup, i researched and i debated and i asked a lot of questions. There aren't any set rules, a lot of the time we, as admins, have to go by what feels right and advice from the internet community because precedents have yet to be set. My main concern is some 14 year old kid running an ircd from his box at home and really not understanding the implications of that.

It's not as easy as "putting the chat back into IRC" as this discussion has proven.

When I started my IRC Network I started strong and I decided not to allow xdcc/warez channels. But after a while(few weeks) you get tired of seeing the same amount of users. So thats when I decided to allow xdcc/warez channels.

What exactly has allowing bots/drones onto your network brought you?

U, in response to your post. I'm convinced that warez have, unfortunately, become a "part of the IRC landscape". Though, that does not mean that servers not allowin warez are not going to be succesful. If we look at the vote here (of course only a selection of people), we see that a lot of people just like to "Chat". So I do not think it's a "needed feature" for an IRC network.

What I don't understand though, is that when the vote is as it is right now, chat > warez, how can it be that most new networks are warez networks? They must be confusing themselves Razz.

Hugs!
a bit late to reply on this, but i think it is because they are impatient and cant wait for their net to grow but dont want to 'waste' connections. so instead, they get fake users that serve a specific purpose, in the hope that it will attract users who may want some of the files shared on the xdcc bots to help their network grow.

personally, i dont think that this method of growth works as i believe it gives bad image to a new network and in the end there aren't and real people to chat with.

just to clarify, yes, i have seen irc networks go horribly wrong due to xdcc. i still have problems with the xdcc bots and leechers from the net i used to be linked to.

so my advice for new players in the game:
try to bring real, human users, not fake users, as it will turn out much better for you in the long run. an easy method for network promotion i found was o tell your friends and get each of them to tell 1 or 2 friends and then get yous friends friends to tell their friends, etc. note this doesnt always work, and often the process is very slow, but if it does work, you generally become a very friendly net, as opposed to one ravaged by abuse and conflict.

well, thats my 2 cents, plus the rest of my change Razz
