but thats just a plain nuisance seeing as all the links are on about 4 different pc's. we dont have access to each computer. each person runs there own share but i thought in the conf there could of been a way to take it from one server.

If you don't have access to all the servers talk to the netadmins about getting the same motds they will proberbly work something out.. Without access it would be impossible as far as i can see anyway.

If your using UnrealIRCd, thought about using remote includes?

Im not sure if you can do that with MOTDs though.

Depending on the type of service's used and the type of message sent, you could disable the motd, and just have service's send the message to the users when they connect. It would be quicker than uploading the motd file to all the servers.

That is true but you still need other servers co-operation anyway

i actually built a system (ironically...called motdserv) to handle that problem....v2.0 is now in testing, the issue is still that lack of access to each server...

Here's what i would recommend to make it easiest. Make templates of your configs and motd so basically everything is the same except connect lines, IPs etc and any other files needed (rules, opermotd etc). Put them on your web hosting account (assuming the network has one) in a folder called files or something. Then all you have to do is in the shell (assuming that they're running *nixl) type: wget http://www.domain.com/files/ircd.motd (or whatever). That's what i do on my network, works well and even makes the installation/configuring much easier for the server admin. Only thing that would really need to be changed is the ircd.conf, and the motd shouldn't need any editing depending on what you have included in it.

It also makes it easier to guarantee that all the servers have the same configuration/rules/motd if u run your network like that.

You need rsync. Details at http://rsync.samba.org

its a cool idea. shame though that im running it on windows box, and the other 4 servers are on Linux. Theres no FTP or Website yet for the actual server but i have some space i use for a personal site. but i might try something else tonight. ill change the path of the motd to my website and upload the motd to it. i will then ask all the other netadmins to change it aswell to the same URL. Might work.

bit like what apostle said.

including from a website, using remote includes, etc won't work. You need to either use an syncronizing program like rsync, or make the admins update their motd...

Honeslty i just let my admins have what ever motd that they want. I have services send the importent info.
