It all depends on what part of IRC you're active in. If you're a user, something to do, somewhere to collaborate, congregate, etc. If you're a chanop, somewhere to let people from your site collaborate, congregate, and perhaps a leadership role (I.E. showing that you can kick the bad people and not have the power go to your head). As for an ircop, same thing as a chanop with the added fun of showing that you know how to run an irc server without screwing up.

I know why I spend time on IRC, I spend time on IRC to share knowlege and also to learn ( as much as some would like to think.... No one knows everything ). As we all know all too well there are alot of "bad" things that go on on IRC servers, but on that same token there are alot of "good" productive things too.

Well thanks for all the feed back. You're right, there are reasons why 'some' not all are confined to cyber space.... mmmm cyber... hah. Anyway, we all have our reasons. As Michael said i'm active in all 3 areas but i think the best use for IRC is to share ideas and knowledge in general. thanks.

I like the fact I can provide a service for the internet at large (though only about 650 people currently use it). I like the fact that people can use a service that I created with the help of shell providers. I see it as a worthwhile hobby for this reason, and that more than justifies my costs. The costs themselves aren't very outlandish either, I have other hobbies that cost alot more and thus aren't done as often (Ham Radios cost at least $400, I can run my network 4 months on that kind of money easily!)
