logging onto one of the big networks yesterday, dalnet, i pulled a channel list, to get a sampling of what was going on there these days.
it didn't take long to figure out the d-a-l stands for degenerates and losers. let me see, there was #familysex, #childsex, #kidsex, #animalsex, #pedomoms, and the list went on and on. some even had lame disclaimers in their topics, stating that while they were admitted slimeballs, they didn't promote file trading. wow, that was comforting.
i realize it's not just dalnet allowing this crap, they just happened to be handy.
to me personally, this is just utterly disgusting, and i think it should disgust you as well.

It is indeed disgusting and a very sad indictment on society at large that these people exist in enough numbers to constitute invasion on IRC servers. It is a sadder indictment that the server admins allow the rooms to exist, they should be shutdown as soon as they are opened.
Just my opinion.

| Hrm, thats one reason why I dropped off dalnet was because of all that trash. I started Darkrealmz to be a place not to allow such crap like that, and me staff and I agree, that any channels like that pop up on Darkrealmz, they will be closed down on site. |

| Then use the list filter feature in your client, stay off that network or complain to the Network Staff. Complaining here won't yield results. It took years and FBI intervention to remove the file sharing channels. It will probably take an act of congress to remove the other stuff. Save yourself a few grey hairs and filter it out and forget about it. |

I have often heard from chat users from networks Ive been on, that they used to be on / or visited dalnet and therefore I was curious to pay a visit to this network myself and take alook at the channel lists - OMG-Need I say anymore, seeing these channels prompted me to contact the Administration at dalnet via email with utter disgust in allowing such names to be displayed in the lists. ( email was sent back in august and to date I have received no reply from them, obviously they are not interested in my complaint which was politely worded.)

As far as I'm concerned, let them go there. If the big nets won't do anything about it, then it's better for the sicko's to go there and not to lower-sized nets like mine.
Same with warez, why must they come on to smaller nets and setup shop when they can just go to dalnet/undernet/etc.? It's not like all the warez business is taken up on those servers.. it makes me wonder.. |

| Don't assume all big networks act the same simply because of their size. They're quite different. |

I agree with William.
We don't get floods of bad users on our small networks...... the big networks filter the IRC population, trapping most of the bad users on the big networks. Thus, most troublemakers never cause trouble for us. If Undernet/DALnet, and the rest want to be home to this kind of scum, let them... it doesn't effect me, and is even benificial in that it keeps them off the smaller, better run networks that I use.
Obviously, the ideal would be that nobody engaged in sexual acts with any minor or anyone who did not give consent....... but this is the real world, and human being will be human beings.
The best thing we can do is confine it, away from society, prevent it from harming members of the general public, and then leave it alone.

Would you like to get off DALnet for a bit? .. DAL is currently #6 on the biggest list .. meaning that there are bigger nets and countless smaller ones that this thread could equally apply to. The phrase 'DALnet' has been used more times in this thread than all the other nets combined. If your going to state facts .. would it be too much trouble to make sure you include everyone the facts apply to or perhaps not mentioning any network in specific?
DALnet isn't that bad of a net for it's size and if you take about 5 seconds to learn how to use channel filters with the /list command you won't see the bad stuff. I've been on DALnet for 8 years and I see more whining about it here than I have there in the whole 8 years and that's saying alot since I was once a Services Admin. Yeah, DALnet has some bad channels on it .. if your not a regular DALnet user ... who really cares??
Name one other network that in the midst of a massive DDoS attack chooses to close it's warez channels leaving tens of thousands of XDCC bots homeless. DALnet lost 90,000 users in that few month time frame and when the dust settled .. the loyal chatters were still there. I've watched hundreds of warez channels dissapear over night, yet the 25+ channels, the flirt channels, the help channels that were there the day DALnet peaked 140,000 users are still there today.
I don't see anyone on this thread that has founded or owns a 100,000 user network and until you do, lets leave the term 'better run networks' out because you have yet to show the world that you can do it 'better'.
You all also have the option of not going to DALnet ever again. |

Thanks.
I'm not trying to stop the thread or the conversation. It's a very valid point .. just getting tired of one network taking the heat. Yeah, some stuff is messed up. That's not a news flash. However, instead of pounding away at a network or claiming that you could do it 'better'. Lets waste less time bitching and invest more time fixing. |

Katsklaw - Ever hear of the term 'Guilty by Association'?
if it barks like a dog and wags its tail like a dog - it's still a dog Katsklaw.
Defending a network you associate with doesn't make the matter any better. |

As far as I know, he isn't associated with Dalnet. He visits there, and talks there. So does that mean I'm associated with dalnet too? aquanight as well? the x-many thousand people are all associated with dalnet? He was just making the valid point that one network shouldn't take all the heat, although I agree that dalnet staff could be a little more proactive, just look at say, criten and you realise that they aren't alone, and therefore one network should not become "guilty by association" and become symbolic of the whole inherant problem.
So, how about we get off people bashing now...? Any volunteers? |
